Senate Passes Same-Sex Marriage Backstop In Face Of Right-Wing Supreme Court

The Senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act Tuesday, which will enshrine some elements of the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision into law.

While it sucks that some throwback states will likely eventually prohibit same-gender marriage, removing the ambiguity of the marriage status of couples who got/get married when and where it is legal is huge. No more wondering if your joint benefits, survivor benefits, medical rights, tax filing status, custody rights could go poof at the whim of an asshole. And any throwback states banning same-gender marriage will be losing tourism and party bucks to the states embracing it.

What a day. Great news about the Same-Sex Marriage bill passing. I am sure there are many people dancing for joy and I am with them 100%. Now on to the debt ceiling.

Good job, Sen. Schumer. Now onto the Debt Ceiling. I think a nice high ceiling like $100T would be most appropriate.

Nobody is happier about this than his family.

The bill requires that people be considered married in any state as long as the marriage is valid in the state it was performed.

That’s a step down from the protections in Obergefell , which also require all states to grant same-sex marriages. **Should the Supreme Court overturn Obergefell , which Justice Clarence Thomas openly rooted for in the Dobbs decision, states would be able to reinstate bans on same-sex marriage. Similar to the current abortion landscape, couples living in states hostile to same-sex marriage would have to travel elsewhere to be legally wed.

Good riddance, Elmer. They have a concrete box with your name on it in Florence, CO just waiting for you. Hopefully they will find the stones to put Trump’s fat ass in a box right next to your’s out there. You can both go completely catatonically insane together.

Have you got a better number ? I think they should just repeal it, but that ain’t happening either. No stones.

At one point during the trial, Mr. Rhodes, who took the stand in his own defense, told the jury he was convinced that antifa activists would storm the White House, overpower the Secret Service and forcibly drag Mr. Trump from the building if he failed to admit his defeat to Mr. Biden.

We were going to do it, I swear, but our pickle ball game ran long.

Doctor Senator Warren sure is right on the debt ceiling. It’s the sword hanging over Joe Biden’s head in the 2023 Congress.

Requires evidence from me, but no ‘blue dog’ senator is signing off on that.

I have my mea culpa card ready.

Exactly! This whole “marriage” foofurraw isn’t about “love” or even “sex” – legally, it’s a property arrangement. With provisions for the care of any children.

So he was arguing an insanity defense?

Don’t get greedy. Hogs get butchered.

$50T ? How high is up ?? It is a ridiculous statute which requires a ridiculous debt limit.

How about a self correcting number? The debt ceiling shall be the amount necessary to assure the validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, shall not be questioned.
