Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the year, citing his “progressing” Parkinson’s disease and surgery this week to remove a “growth” from his kidney.
So Georgia’s constitution allows the (Republican) governor to appoint a replacement who will serve for three years (to early 2023), with no special election next year?
How Southern!
Edit: The Journal Constitution says that there WILL be an election next year, meaning that both of Georgia’s seats will be up. A real chance for Democrats, if the new election system proves relatively honest.
I assume that whoever wins the seat will only serve for the remainder of the term. I expect Abrams would go after the 6-year term if she decides to run for the Senate.
Well, I don’t mean to be super harsh, but as I’ve gotten older (not 70 yet), I’ve greatly noticed it. Add some gray hair in there and … the world looks at (and treats) you differently.
