South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) said late Monday that participants at a July 3 celebration for Independence Day at Mount Rushmore with President Trump will not be required to practice social distancing, despite CDC recommendations amid soaring COVID-19 cases in hotspots across the country.
Trump has NO compunction in putting his base at risk (128K US Covid deaths) while indemnifying himself with NDA’s as long as he can be “on brand”!
BTW, those planned fireworks could damage Mt. Rushmore…
Yet Trump who is into protecting the confederate/racists statues does NOT seem to give a damn about the potential damage to Mt. Rushmore!
Noem said officials in her state have focused on urging South Dakotans “to focus on personal responsibility.” The governor added, “Every one of them has the opportunity to make a decision that they’re comfortable with.”
THAT’S NOT HOW THIS FUCKING WORKS! It’s an airborne deadly pandemic. People who are considered essential workers don’t have the ability to just stay home if they want to. They have to worry about paying their bills and losing insurance coverage because assholes like Noem refuse to accept the Medicaid Expansion. It only works when we all work together, not every idiot for himself.
This is a great message for possible attendees. It’s effectively going to filter out every person who has even a qualm about infection, and therefor all the people who would be a) less likely to do anything to mitigate potential spread, and b) more likely to already be infected.
It’s a death cult.
Or, perhaps, more like snake handling. A test of your faith.
“We told those folks that have concerns that they can stay home,” Noem told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Monday night.“We won’t be social distancing,” she added.
At least the four real presidents who will be there are at no risk of infection. Meanwhile, Mt. Rushmore is not far from what may soon be the appropriately named town of Deadwood.
The hardcore can be found at the intersection of nature and nurture.
No. And no amount of charred national forest will change that.
“My job was to put out the fires,” said former National Park Service fire management officer Bill Gabbert, who worked in the area for three years, ending in 2001. “Internally in our discussions I recommended that people not shoot fireworks over flammable vegetation. I think it’s insane to explode fireworks over flammable material and ponderosa pine vegetation.”
“It’s a bad idea based on the wildland fire risk, the impact to the water quality of the memorial, the fact that is going to occur during a pandemic without social distancing guidelines and the emergency evacuation issues,” said former superintendent at Mount Rushmore National Park Cheryl Schreier, adding that all other tourists will be barred from the park on July 3. “And you’re closing off the memorial to visitors who might not normally have a chance to visit Mount Rushmore.”
