The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Congress does have the authority to subpoena President Trump’s personal financial records, but in an opinion that will likely delay Congress’ ability to access those records until after the election.
The opinion laid out a four part test for what factors the court should weigh as they decide whether to enforce congressional subpoenas involving the President.
Judges should only make law when it suits their political purposes.
What are the chances that Trump is hiding his tax returns due to him cheating his niece and nephew out of Fred’s estate and that any Russian rubles was just an additional reason?
Typical narrow reading by Roberts, who depends on assorted administrative or procedural issues when writing decisions.
The House will eventually get the information.
While it would be nice if it happened before the election, the important thing is the reaffirmation by SCOTUS of the power of Congress to investigate as part of its oversight duties.
This was not a win for Trump. A temporary reprieve, at best, and the loss in the Vance case is stunningly bad for Donnie.
His meltdown over this is proof of what a horrible day he’s already having.
I still say the Republican establishment is laying the ground work for easing Trump’s decision to turn things over to another candidate. This is damage control from the inside out. I doubt it will work, because it’s still inside the bubble magical thinking, but there are just too many career Republicans turning on him for me to believe there isn’t something going on in the smoke-filled back rooms…
Whatever the lower court does, it will be appealed again to the supreme court, who very conveniently are fucking off to their summer vacation starting tomorrow and will not be back until October. They will not render any more relevant decisions until safely after the election.
That photo reminds me that a smile is a frown turned upside down,to only be a fly on the wall at 1600 this morning.I guess the watch word for all the walls at 1600 “INCOMING”
The GOP establishment may want him to go, but I can’t imagine how they could force him out if he doesn’t want to go. He may be unhappy, but there is no better-protected and powerful position in the world than POTUS. Even if he loses the election, he’ll have another few months to hang on to the power and “borrowed” respect of the office.
He may even be banking on Russian interference or some outside surprise in October that gives him a win in November. He’s a gambler and will take that chance. He does have a history of walking away from failed projects, but only after they’ve completely crashed and burned. That hasn’t happened yet.
Well, for the Manhattan DA’s subpoena (which I think is demanding records from trumps accountants, I assume the Manhattan DA’s office serves the subpoena, to Mazars, and the NYPD would force compliance if necessary. But I am not a lawyer.
Why wouldn’t he? It’s what his lawyers have been telling him and what the GOP, Federalist Society, ALEC and the rest have been trying to turn the Presidency into for decades now.
