Her replacement would not necessarily get the seat, but the Democrats will be able to fill the committee seat once she resigns.

California has a population of almost 40 million. There are far more than enough black women in the state who are quite qualified to be a Senator - besides Ms. Lee. Two others, besides Lee, are already in the House. Newsom has a very large number of fine alternatives to choose from. Many would be delighted to serve as an interim Senator without seeking reelection. California voters should absolutely be entitled to make the ultimate decision on a level playing field.

Talk of a temporary replacement and shingles is sign of how fucked up things are. She needs to be totally replaced because of dementia, as almost everyone knows. So we have a mad circus. To some extent, she, as an individual with agency, created this herself, but she is not alone. Obviously, agency and dementia don’t go well together, which is part of the problem; another part being pure blind self-interest under the guise of “serving”, nothing but destructive, and putting many in difficult positions; and another part is the pusillanimity of some of those put by Feinstein in difficult positions.
Just have her sign a resignation, and tell her she’s heading back “soon” whenever she asks.

We can’t diagnose from afar, but the few times I’ve seen her in the past few years, she did not impress me as functioning anywhere near the level a Senator must. Her bizarre and emotional embrace of Lindsay Graham after the Coney-Barrett hearings was a sign that she was no longer the strong and sensible personality of even her recent past. And I’ve read many reports of her staff having trouble managing her, helping her remember things. Schumer should not be coddling her.
But Mitch being an asshole is part of the landscape and has to be accounted for in timing decisions.
Your excellent Senator is mine as well. There are other people in Mass able to do this job – It’s not like we are Wyoming with 5 people and 10 cows. Rep Presley could easily step up and her house minority seat can be filled with someone else.
