Right-Wing Fixation on Book Bans is Here to Stay

I just wish it was like the old days when some prudes didn’t like bathroom humor.
What I don’t get from the MFL and others claiming that Blacks, Asians, Native Americans, and anyone who is not white and Christian are squashing the white Christians. I really, really want to test their knowledge of not just Am Hist but world history. With some of these folks I’m getting “divine rule” vibes, thus whitewashing this Jesus person and his origin story.

I arrived and departed from Wayne but only departed from Hope.

Houston, for one, is blue. I met two Houstonians in Springfield TN to see the total solar eclipse in 2017. They were weary of being lumped in with goat ropers – their words – by outsiders who tended to miss the trees for the forest.

ETA: Houston is so blue that Texas state legislators passed Senate bill 1933 to allow them to meddle in , and perhaps try to overturn, election results in Harris County. It became effective September 1st.

Houston btw is 4th in U.S. city population, behind NYC, LA, and Chicago.

I’d also like to discuss that in my lifetime I can remember people picketing movie theaters because of the movie that was being shown. One had to pay for a movie ticket to see the “naughty” film.
But with some of these protests about books, and subjects in the books someone has to open the covers of the book, read the words, and then decide if it is offensive. And as there has been reporting recently a lot of these challenges to books in schools are brought by an adult that never picked up the book in question, nor read it. They are challenging the same titles all over the country because someone who didn’t read the book did a Google search of the text to see if there were certain key words in the book.

I made a comment when this banning of books was first being reported on that the person objecting to a book has to write a book report on why it shouldn’t be allowed in the school’s library, or public library. I thought I was being a bit cheeky, but now I really think this should be the process to get a book banned. If you can’t write a report stating why, and back it up with specific commentary, then it’s a parenting problem and not a school problem.

I stumbled over that too, but I think Francis was referring to Austin as the seat of the state government. (ETA: correct gender for FrancIs)

Our daughter loved Captain Underpants. She’s dyslexic and fight through that to read about the captain. The pictures helped.

As a former Marine and Vietnam vet I agree the Green Beret movie with John Wayne is the worst Vietnam Movie ever!

Just listened to that book! It’s great, as always. She’s one of my faves.

I’m not saying “Captain Underpants” is bad or good, it just seemed to set some parents off. And I’ve heard about kids who are dyslexic, or having other problems with reading will work to read the “popular” book. And that’s why I think parents should be the judge of what their child reads, but their child only.
Hell I remember some of the kerfluffle over Harry Potter. And the HP books also worked with some kids who didn’t like to read.

I mean there have been fart jokes since time immemorial. And having PBS show Monty Python when I was growing up just added to the fun.

In an elementary school class of 20 plus kids someone’s gonna gas it. When it happens you’re about 30 seconds away from a group of giggling kids. Better to be prepared with a book and make it a teachable moment. Schools spend time and resources to get kids to read. Book bans are completely unnecessary.

Maybe. But I can’t imagine putting Tuli Kupferberg’s Teach Yourself Fucking on the 3rd grade curriculum. That’s one the MfLers wouldn’t have to read – the title alone is a bit much for tots and older.

This is always the way with censors. The book is dangerous for other people to read, but the censor is of stronger character. And other parents can’t be trusted to decide what their children read. So, the censor must intervene. And like all modern Republican orgs and actions, Moms for Liberty has a name that perverts its own meaning. Many aren’t Moms, and none are for Liberty.

Gee, what tyrants these b*tches be.

Most schools and libraries have policies and procedures adopted by their governing boards that specify procedures for objecting to a book. Usually, the objector has to answer a series of questions intended to get at the reason for the objection. The first question is often, “Have you read the book.” Usually, after the objector has filled out the questionaire, the objection is submitted to a panel that considers the objection in light of collection development policies, professional reviews, and the like.
Busybodies for Getting Up in Your Business are far too busy to participate in due process. They just want to go to a board meeting and demand what they want on the basis that they are taxpayers and should get what they want.

I only read this article because it was about Moms etc. TPM is off Sat. These cafe articles are unneeded. At least I think so.

Ban the Bible cuz it’s chock full of porn, torture, killing and war stories

Yep, I agree. By the time a book hits a school library it’s been “vetted” and approved by so many different committees, it amazes me any books are approved. Now books need to be ok so the Christian nationalists don’t get hurt feelings? It’s the GQP version of woke. Only upside down and in reverse…

ETA didn’t see @gajake comment above. Exactly.

I always thought it was karmic that he was asked to present the Best Picture award in 1979 that The Deer Hunter won. It would be his last public appearance as he died two months later.
