Republicans’ Self-Own Game Continues On Day Three Of No House Of Representatives – TPM – Talking Points Memo

The GOP has not figured out that there are potentials for other factions.

Jeffries should nominate Liz Cheney for Speaker.

None of the Dems should vote for her, but it’d be hilarious, just the same.

Sort of. We saw yesterday that with the 1 vote of ‘present’, the clerks were counting “433” votes, not 434. Since the Speaker only needs to win a majority of the votes cast for someone, 217 is a majority of 433. Every 2 ‘present’ votes added in drop the threshold by 1 more. If enough Republicans vote ‘present’ to be clever, Jeffries wins before McCarthy does.

Fun to watch her squirm, though.

"These considerations suggest that the pseudo-conservative political style, while it may already have passed the peak of its influence, is one of the long waves of twentieth-century American history and not a momentary mood. I do not share the widespread foreboding among liberals that this form of dissent will grow until it overwhelms our liberties altogether and plunges us into a totalitarian nightmare. Indeed, the idea that it is purely and simply fascist or totalitarian, as we have known these things in recent European history, is to my mind a false conception, based upon the failure to read American developments in terms of our peculiar American constellation of political realities. (It reminds me of the people who, because they found several close parallels between the NRA and Mussolini’s corporate state, were once deeply troubled at the thought that the NRA was the beginning of American fascism.) However, in a populistic culture like ours, which seems to lack a responsible elite with political and moral autonomy, and in which it is possible to exploit the wildest currents of public sentiment for private purposes, it is at least conceivable that a highly organized, vocal, active and well-financed minority could create a political climate in which the rational pursuit of our well-being and safety would become impossible "

There will be bipartisan activity in the House, after a Speaker is selected (even if that person is not Jeffries)

And by “some folks,” do you mean teenaged boys and men who never matured?

When Kevin “I have no integrity at all” McCarthy is the choice that 90% of the caucus thinks is the best option, that says volumes. I realize that integrity isn’t a requirement for that caucus, but imagine watching him give more ground to the opposition.
It will be interesting to read about the machinations if and when this ends. There must be members talking to Scalise right now and saying “you have to do it–he’s not the right guy”. (And yes, I’m a little queasy thinking that Scalise might be an option.)

He might not be an option. One of the things Boebert said to Stephanie Ruhl last night was basically ‘nobody currently in leadership is qualified for it’.

I’m starting to wonder who dodged the bigger bullet by not electing a crazy. Pennsylvania or Arizona?
