Republicans Kill Attempt to Subpoena FCC Chair After Jimmy Kimmel Suspension

I hate it when lawyers may have been Econ majors under grad.
Two foreign languages.

“Kimmel is probably locked into a golden parachute even if he’s permanently taken off the air. But if he wanted to, he could probably have one of the country’s biggest podcasts or YouTube more or less overnight. Others can too. I repeat the salient point. Taking non-gelded media and/or news off the air doesn’t decrease the demand for it. Follow the demand.” Josh Marshall.

That point was one I made to Mr.mch over lunch today. (Well, he watched me eat. He was fasting in prep for cataract surgery a few hours later.) Who owns YouTube?

A day later? Gee, let’s get real. First, he and his wife have had a thousand phone calls to deal with. He’s barely had a chance to process this on a personal level. Talks with lawyers? Those don’t get wrapped up overnight. Not to mention developing a longer term strategy with friends like Colbert. I find Kimmel’s silence reassuring. He’s not rushing to anything short-term. As they say, stay tuned.

Tonight I was talking with my daughter in NY, mostly about her father’s cataract surgery today. Onto their young dog’s HIVES (who knew dogs can get hives? well, on reflection, why not?). This while she’s busy lawyering and her husband’s distracted from the focus of his work by trying to figure out how to keep mental health programs in NY funded, now that federal funding has been cut… As for vaccines for their 9 and 6 year olds. Well, they’ve been onto that, with no joy. At least for COVID. Their pediatrician said to go to a pharmacy, but no pharmacies will provide them. Brave New World.

Teh gOOgLe.

If you keep asking awkward questions, you may end up in a re-education compound. Not threatening, just saying.
(I kid, I kid. I hope)

Harris + Other = a majority of voters. Yes, every time they peddle that particular brand of nonsense someone should call them out on it, not that it would make them stop, but for the principle of the thing.

Not entirely related but: The knife sticking in my back gets twisted just a little bit every time Donald Trump is referred to as President. TPM tends to call him that at least once in every little snippet in Where Things Stand or Morning Memo. If you want to call him that once per Morning Memo or WTS, okay. Do what you must. But reading that odious combination of “President” and :“Trump” over and over and over here at TPM is making for a bad user experience. Maybe it’s what the Style Manual calls for, but fuck the Style Manual. These ain’t normal times.

Looked into a (very) little, and I still have no idea who own(s) YouTube. Or Google (Alphabet). Or whatever. I came upon this:

Corporate law must be very profitable. Those poor souls laboring over all of this, to great material profit.

Trump really does think he’s King. It’s past time for his demise.

Good idea, and why not start with Jimmy Kimmel? We’re going into the second day after his show was pulled, and unless I missed it, I’m not seeing any public statement from him yet.

This is an opportunity to tell his own story instead of having it framed for him by others. Another day or two of remaining quiet is going to make him look like he was cowed by Trump, and just surrendered the fight.

You know that saying about how a lie travels halfway around the world while the truth is still getting its boots on? The online world moves at the speed of light, while everyone other than Kimmel is framing the story. One short comment is all I’m looking for, not a fully developed strategy.

Looks like Taco Tuesday came a day early and ABC has reinstated Kimmel. My theory is that Disney is caving to public pressure after their streaming cancellation system crashed from people cutting off the Mouse and Disney is daring Carr to follow through on his threat (actually a bluff.) Carr (and Trump) know they are on thin ice so we’ll see a lot of sound and fury before they cave.

It will be interesting to see what Sinclair and Nexstar do. If the ratings teally are low, maybe they pull Kimmel. I hope the “ratings” rationale is BS and they either cave or lose money. I’m fine with either outcome.
