Republicans Compile Anti-Impeachment Talking Points Ahead Of Public Hearings

On Tuesday, Republicans on the House Intelligence, Oversight, and Foreign Affairs committees sent out a list of talking points arguing against the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

I just caught 1A on public radio for a bit and was stunned by the number of people (public radio listeners) who are still reluctant/confused about the reasons for impeachment. Jordan et al will succeed and that’s mainly due to the MSM and their relentless horse race and false equivalences. The media is not our friend.

“To appropriately understand the events in question–and most importantly, assess the President’s state of mind during his interaction with President Zelensky–context is necessary,” the memo, first obtained by CNN, reads.

So, the Republicans are going to have Trump come in to testify about his “state of mind” or will they simply tell us what it was since they just know these things?

You can quickly scan through and see that they got nothing to defend him with.

Oh dog, who would even want to try to fathom such a thing…

When will these talking points be utilized through an interpretive dance? Tomorrow’s public hearings, I presume?

So whomever is running the hearings needs to control this nonsense. I know they have a list of ‘witnesses’ they want to call, but this is a narrow scope deal here and distracting or pushing the scope must not be allowed.

If the testimony doesn’t pertain to the topic at hand, it should be squelched. And yes, on national TV with a rejoinder that makes it clear the testimony is irrelevant. Period.

The republican arguments only work if you don’t actually look at the call, even as released by the president. Zelensky talks about buying Javelins-- the military aid-- Trump responds by talking about the favor required.

Another sophomoric attempt by what’s left of the Republican party to look sentient. Instead of using Stephen Miller-esque hyperbole and bias, you’d think they’d dumb this document down for their followers. Not that anyone really gives a crap, eh?

Depends on how you define succeed, if their intention is to keep Trump’s brainless base from ditching him, then they already have succeeded as in that will never happen. If you think they’ll succeed in pushing their prevarications and fables around the Bidens over the top of public opinion etc. none of that bears scrutiny, it will only dig their hole of bad faith deeper.

Then there are the visuals, pasty white nationalist lying lickspittles such as they are…just bad optics all around for the Trumpsters.

I would love if the transcript, in all its glory, were first read out loud and into the record during the televised broadcast.

It’s way past time for that. Needs to get done, stat.

If one wants to clarify exactly what’s being tried, this is the way to go about it. And not be shy about pointing out IN THE TRANSCRIPT exactly what the GOP is lying about.

We can’t underestimate the stupidity and anger of the cult. This will play to its audience.

Shorter memo:

Trump is an incompetent, corrupt loony who believes conspiracy theories and is out only to help himself, so we need to confuse enough people to think that these things that would get any other person removed from office are just fine and normal.

And, if possible, act like you believe them, too (we know you actually do, Gaetz).

Not to mention the endless punditry “interpreting” afterwards. No one’s mind will be changed.

There have been plenty of references to and questions about the transcript already in the various testimony. That’ll certainly continue to be the case in the open hearings.

Bercow will be missed… :pensive:

I hope so - because this is the one chance to get the unexpurgated version out in to the world. Clips and snips are fine, but then the accusation is ‘out of context’. No. Give all the context. It’s not like these calls went on for six hours or anything. Read the whole thing. Every word. Leave nothing to the imagination.

If you have to, bring in puppets.
