Republican Rep. Open To Impeaching Trump Says He’s ‘Very Concerned’ About GOP

Yes, this isn’t an ala carte menu. If you’re in for a penny, you’re in for a pound.

I’d also argue the Republican economic argument (cut the safety net while giving tax cuts to the wealthiest among us) is dependent upon scapegoating the economically weak and vulnerable. Like immigrants, women, and people of color. It’s not an accident and not just because of racism that this is happening.

Like I say probably more often than people would like - when we killed the draft, we killed the Republic.

I used to think we need Republicans because we need conservative political thought. I was wrong. Now that they’re advocates of domestic and international lawlessness, they’re useless.

We have all the political conservative thought we need from the Bidens, Buttegieges and Klobochars that have by and large taken over the Democratic Party with certain obvious exceptions.

What we lack is a second party that can effectively campaign from the liberal side of the lib/con spectrum.

This was the idea behind Americorps, and it’s really not a bad idea. You teach young people skills, connect them to people they wouldn’t meet (including some in different classes, races, backgrounds, etc), and get them invested in making America into a better place. Lay out multiple paths (military being one of them), and possibly ways to follow the paths into real careers. There are a lot of details to work out, but the concept is sound…which means it won’t happen, as Matt pointed out there are too many people currently who see any government program, no matter how minor, as trying to induct their kids into socialism liberal whacko ideas.

We really need to get over the part where a fraction of Americans are fed lies every day, and it’s now to the point that they refuse to believe anything but the lies. That’s damage that has to be contained if we’re going to progress as a nation…removing Trump won’t do it, the lies will continue to propagate, people will continue to be fooled by the BS conspiracies, and they will drag us down with politicians that feed off the lies (whether they believe them or not).

“Self-sorting”? What’s with these Republicans and all of their self-sorting, self-deporting, self-dealing, and self-impeaching?

I’m sorry that someone with these beliefs doesn’t feel like he’s got a place in either party.
We can argue about money - we’re supposed to argue about money - but certain issues should be apolitical. Violence and the environment should be 2 of them.
I’d be happy to fight tooth and nail over economic policy while separating environmental issues from the debate. SOME Florida GOPers in some ways are more open to environmental debates because well, 98 degree September days, red tide, and monster hurricanes are hard to ignore.
We all know the eventual issue with climate change - it doesn’t matter if you believe in it, it believes in you. BTW - Romney mentioned environmental policy as something else that the current GOP is getting wrong recently.
There is an opening here - how do we take it?

I’m an alumna of Americorps and had a good experience. It was damn hard work but I never really looked back once I had started.

“…but the concept is sound…which means it won’t happen, as Matt pointed out there are too many people currently who see any government program, no matter how minor, as trying to induct their kids into socialism liberal whacko ideas…”

And, the ironic thing is Americorps is the domestic version really of the Peace Corps. Meaning, it tries to assist Americans, doing some good here in this country.

But, yeah, socialism.

It’s their rugged individualism philosophy I guess.

Wonder where their Jebus went? Thought they dragged him along into everything.

I love how he says everyone in Congress is quaking with fear at the thought of crossing Donnie, AFTER he announced his retirement.

Our daughter is also an alum of AmeriCorps. It was a valuable and extraordinary experience for her. She helped to run a teen center in a small town beset with high unemployment, drug addicted adults, and poverty. She learned a ton about life and finding the good in people especially teens who were facing situations that seemed insurmountable. It was a lesson in privilege for her ( her own) and she like you has never regretted the experience.

I think thru the last few decades the Republicans have themselves built the BASE they are stuck with now.

David Frum and David Brooks and Peter Wehner all come across as honorable decent people. But they never seemed to notice what was actually going on beneath the surface of their electorate.

Likewise, Rooney seems to be a decent thoughtful honorable person. Who just never ‘noticed’ what was going on.

The GOP (like organized Christianity, whose Evangelical wing is destroying the brand) will go down to an EXTREMIST miniscule membership, screaming and shaking their fists at everybody who does not agree with them. BECAUSE THEY SHOWED THEIR HYPOCRISY upfront and unapologetically and now can’t get their membership back.

The did build their base through gerrymandering mainly and through making a deal with the evangelicals.

Kinda like a deal with the devil?

I would really be in favor of a program that all teens would be required to participate in between high school and college.

Can do a mix. If you link funding college to national service, you can do that either with service upfront and the scholarship earned that way, or they can serve after university and have loan forgiveness in exchange.

I’d be leery of sending everyone right into service out of high school, different people develop different ways, and it’s not going to be the right time for everyone.
