The invasion of Ukraine by itself is a crime. Ukraine posed no threat to Russia. There was no reason at all for this.
The invasion does not need to be “investigated” because it fucking happened. It was in all the newspapers and broadcast as it happened. It’s before the world’s eyes, It does not need to be investigated to see if it’s real or not in spite of the lies Ambassador Lavrov has said.

On the floor this morning, McConnell said that “her service as a criminal defense lawyer and on the U.S. sentencing commission give her special empathy for convicted criminals.” A popular offshoot of this “soft on crime” GOP narrative is a focus on her defense of Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Funny how McConnell still thinks he can use a dog whistle approach to oppose Jackson when its inevitable that one or more GOP Senators will make the racism explicit. Republicans just don’t do subtext anymore.

I expect China to largely sit the fence, which is fine. Neutralized is where we want them. I’m sure they were tempted and toyed with allying with Putin or sending assistance of some kind, etc., but the sanctions we leveled on Russia and its oligarchs would go exponentially worse for China and would reverberate far worse around the globe. China would probably suffer millions of deaths depending on how long it all lasted and we’d be looking at potentially worse than the Great Depression around the world. Unmitigated/able disaster and catastrophe for humanity doesn’t even begin to describe it.

CGTN America may be different than local China state TV. While CGTN America does report little blurbs of the Ukraine war, such as ‘1700 Russian tanks have been destroyed in Ukraine’ (don’t know how they got this number), it is still just blips of real news. Xinhua, the major state media, largely ignores Ukraine. You have to dig deeper under “Europe” sub- sub-headings for any mention of Ukraine, then you can find this:
"China always stands for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, and abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, [Yang, Dir Foreign Affairs] said, adding that China is committed to promoting peace talks. …

If McConnell wants “hard on crime” he should move to Russia and stand by the Kremlin with a blank sign and see how long it takes for the cops to beat the snot out of him. Or just say the words “war”, “Ukraine”, “Special Military Action” or a number of other words in public. Just saying them in no particular order will cause an arrest and jail. Howzzat for “hard on crime”??
