House Democrats plan to frame their case for impeaching President Donald Trump as a check on his “abuse of power,” according to an NBC News report Monday.
The NBC article goes better into detail, but I do agree that labels matter, and that label should be something that’s very clear and includes directly illegal acts in it.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been adamant that the case against Trump must be targeted and easy to communicate in order to build public support, according to those familiar with discussions.
This is the right impulse. Keep pursuing the potentially illegal acts, but find something that is clearly a “high crime or misdemeanor” so the Republicans can’t use their usual strategy of shifting the discussion from clear moral turpitude to arcane legalistic hairsplitting.
High Crimes are clearly ones which are done after smoking weed. So since we haven’t caught him doing drugs…
And Misdemeanors are the lowest classification of crimes, often resulting in a tiny fine and no jail time, so can’t possibly rise to an impeachable level.
In my neighborhood there’s this beer store that has so many beers I swear if you tried a new beer everyday for the rest of your life you’d never try them all. Simply because there are new beers being added every single day. Donald Trump is that store, but instead of beers he’s churning out an impeachable offense daily.
I don’t mind an internal framing in terms of abuse of power – but any public campaign should perhaps (and likely will) use some concrete language (as well).
I would agree to not limit impeachment to the Ukraine QPQ. I don’t think “Abuse of Power” has a great ring to it, though. It is simple, short and sweet, which is good.
Betrayal of Oath of Office? Treason? Failure to Protect Country and Constitution? I don’t know, maybe Abuse of Power is OK. Seems to lack some punch, and every president seems to have been accused of this at one point or another.
