READ: Liberty Sues Jerry Falwell For Millions In Damages Over Granda Episode | Talking Points Memo

They’re all hypocrites, however. It can’t have been a secret that Falwell led a dissolute life.

Non-lawyer here, but from a common-sense sort of perspective, Granda had no contractual relationship with Liberty U.

If he broke extortion laws, it was Falwell he was extorting.

It’s true that if Falwell failed to play along and the info therefore got out, Liberty U. would also be damaged.

But Granda wasn’t extorting Liberty. He didn’t go to them and say, “If you guys don’t pay me a bunch, I’ll release this damning info about your president.”

In fact, he couldn’t do that and extort Falwell, because once he told the board what he had, Falwell would have little left to lose.

Granda had a relationship with Falwell’s wife as the son of the famous preacher allegedly looked on.

“What’s wrong with THAT?”

Falwell is going to pay an awful lot for something he could have gotten for $900 from a certain tax collector in FL.

So much for Falwell’s claim that the University still loves him and welcomes him back on campus.

Ironically, Liberty U doesn’t have a prayer.

The Lord works in mysterious ways? Jesus has found a way to take back His Church by breaking up the fake one conservatives set up in His name? Jesus Christ is proving yet again that he is a progressive super star. Keep that social justice gospel moving into the 21st century and beyond.

“Liberty accuses Falwell in the lawsuit of breach of contract…”

Becki: “Well, at least he finally breached SOMETHING.”

Here’s to hoping the suit turns into a Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, and everything is eaten up in costs.

This is ridiculous. I am not a fan of the Falwells but Liberty University would not exist without His Holiness Reverend Dr. Jerry Falwell Jr. He is literally the Creator and owner of Liberty University, he built its brand and what it represents.

And pray, why do His Holiness Dr. Jerry Falwell and Becki have to tell the holier-than-thou christian extremists at Liberty who they are having sex with?

The Board approved the gifting of the Liberty gym or a large chunk of the campus to Grandi did they not?

This is more or less what I came here to comment on.

The rumors about Granda were floating around by 2018. I wouldn’t expect the board to immediately throw their president under the bus just because of some rumors. In fact, it’s best practice not to do that on such a thin reed.

But if you’re negotiating a new contract and you’ve got a whiff that something might be amiss, you damn well look into it.

At a minimum, you straight-up ask the guy. If he says, “That’s all a fabrication,” and then it later turns out to not have been a fabrication, you’re in a much stronger position.

The board is right, but they’re also covering their asses for their earlier choice not to know.

I’d agree that this is not going to be a victory for Liberty. But it will be a big loss for both Liberty and Falwell if it gets as far as discovery. Their respective closets hold a lot of skeletons.

They tell all the rest of us? And tell us we can’t use birth control, too?

Christopher Hitchens characterized Jerry Falwell Sr. as a “pickpocket” and minced no words of criticism upon his death. With Jerry Falwell Jr. it seems the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Yeah, that jumped out at me too. That hasn’t been established in a court, so, um isn’t Liberty potentially exposing itself to a defamation suit here?

Here’s the allegation, which is in paragraph 140 in the third cause of action (count):

“Virginia Code, [section] 8.01-499, 500 prohibits two or more persons from agreeing to injure another in their trade or business.”

Its actually a pretty shitty complaint. But it’s like rats vs. cockroaches – let them both fight it out and that it gets really ugly.

This just tickles me…I am so shallow.

I don’t think any of the parties are interested in having their very dirty laundry aired. If Falwell has any sense at all and competent legal advice, he will settle out of court.

I doubt this is the way Jesus does " business" in heaven. He doesn’t come out of a board room and fires whomever George feels is being disloyal or haggles over contract language.

The Conservative Movement and its GOP political arm is nothing but a struggling business ready to be taken over in a hostile takeover by whatever Russian Mafia hood comes along to squeeze out the assets.
