If the remembrance of Robert E. Lee is no longer a state holiday, or widely celebrated, then the Saturday following should be open for voting. Let the White People Only party have their private celebration, sure; but don’t allow the dead hand of the dead Confederate prevent the living from controlling their destiny.
Oh, they’re not celebrating Robert E Lee. They’re celebrating their “heritage”! Like some people celebrate Hit, er, April 20 Day.
It’s not just that ordinary Americans don’t like MyPants (and coming close to be hanged didn’t change that), but the R establishment doesn’t like him. The lot of a former Veep is not full of opportunities. Even the lobbying groups who usually take in failed pols don’t want him.
Hmm a liberal talking head like Maddow is interfering in an election, but a right wing nut job who not only talked about Trump on his TV show, but spoke at his rallies was not interfering in an election.
In case you hadn’t heard about this celebration.
Lindsey Graham says hello from January 6, 2021.
If you drop the “inarticulate” then you’d have Party of Crazy People (PCP).
Phencyclidine or phenylcyclohexyl piperidine, also known as angel dust among other names, is a dissociative anesthetic mainly used recreationally for its significant mind-altering effects. PCP may cause hallucinations, distorted perceptions of sounds, and violent behavior.
Twisted and even hypocritical thinking is the new normal. But what else does MyPants have to say? “I Was Toadie Who Was Illiterate” could be the answer.
A very important election.
GOTV…
In spite of her painful loss to a spiteful Kemp (horrible answer to her gracious concession), I hope Stacey Abrams is able to harness her awesome assets to help Warnock over the line to victory.
Suppression of voters more likely to vote Democrat specifically.
As others have pointed out, doing the right thing once doesn’t make Raffensperger an honorable official: he’s still a Republican first and these days it is not possible to be that and an honorable official consistently or even necessarily a good citizen at all.
I feel mad whenever something calls to mind the fact that a yahoo like Kemp can be elected over a true public servant like Abrams.
Let’s face it, Black women are often not successful in winning an office and keeping it. Val Demings who lost to a dummy named Rubio, is a recent example, Carol Mosley Braun is an early example and Shirley Chisholm who persisted in spite of knowing it would be an uphill climb. White women in politics are barely tolerated and for Black women it’ll always be even more difficult.
@tindalos Early voting procedures in GA were made in such a way as to prevent early voting.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/14/us/politics/georgia-senate-runoff-holiday-rules.html
The runoff, set in motion when neither candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote in last Tuesday’s election, will be held on Dec. 6. The mandatory early-voting period runs for five days from Nov. 28 through Dec. 2. But it is now limited to weekdays, with the lone possible Saturday excluded by a 2016 law.
Georgia is barred from holding early voting on the second Saturday before a runoff if the preceding Thursday or Friday are state holidays. The Saturday in question, Nov. 26, is two days after Thanksgiving and one day after a state holiday that once commemorated Robert E. Lee’s birthday. In 2015, Georgia dropped the Confederate tribute, but kept the state holiday.
Anyone up for a game of Royal Fizzbin?
OK, so if I am reading GA election law correctly, early voting on the Saturday after Thanksgiving is specifically not allowed. How can Raffensberger claim counties can make their own rules? Is he trying to get those early votes then thrown out later?
“there’s a very good possibility that we’ll probably have voting on Saturday, November 26th, in many of the counties if they so choose and we’re planning for that right now.”
Ruh-roh. Two Russian missiles have hit Poland.
AP story not confirmed that they were Russian missiles. Two dead.
Easiest political argument to make in 90% of red states:
You’ve been electing the same people from the same party for the last 100 years. How is it working out?
I do recall a number of folks reminding us before that even though Raffensperger wasn’t going to be corrupted by Trump he is still a Georgia Republican and realizes if he can limit the majority’s opportunity to vote he can still be reelected by the white minority.
Uhh, what? Did some historically illiterate person in the PR dept. think they saw this on their advent calendar? It sounds vaguely “christmasy”.
The Friday state holiday is a placeholder from when Georgia formally celebrated Confederate general Robert E. Lee’s birthday.
I would like to point out here that Robert E. Lee’s birthday is in January. And I know that because Virginia used to celebrate Lee-Jackson day on the same day that is now the Martin Luther King holiday. (For a while, the state called it Lee-Jackson-King day, which struck a lot of people as fairly ludicrous; then the state dropped Lee and Jackson from it, but the Friday before MLK Day was added as a holiday for state government workers,)
Wait… who reversed themselves? Headline indicates one way to me, the article is the opposite
Usually someone snarks at the one who changed course.
