The United States is now in that liminal state of transition to a reordered power configuration. When this happened in Russia in 2012, the group crushing the fragile neoliberal coalition that had been tolerated in the heady days of windfall oil revenues was swept away by the siloviki. Russia’s upper house, the Federation Council (Supreme Soviet in earlier times) had become an advisory body by 2015. That left the Duma as the only body needed to confer some legislative cred to Putin. We similarly have a Senate that has been virtually moribund for years, called into service only when the super-rich need a judge, money has to be approved or taxes lowered. A $1.2 trillion hole was punched in the federal budget that doesn’t even raise eyebrows.
But the biggest progress in this age of power politics is surely the institutional dismantling on the executive side. State has been gutted, embassy staff long gone, foreign policy turned into favor-granting. Nato is experiencing "brain death", which is several hundred billion dollars in the bank as far as Putin is concerned. Allies like the pro-American Kurds in Syria and Iraq sold out. Nicaragua, Honduras, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil… failed policies across the board.

He’ll be bombarded with Trump Impeachment related questions.
However, if MORE revelations continue to emerge between now and the election, Trump may be gone. If so, the damage he has done to our government will begin to heal. The Senate needs to come next…

As Pompeo insisted from the podium that there were no conditions for Zelensky’s visit, reporters trained their zoom lens cameras on a piece of paper sticking out of his back pocket. The paper appears to have read, “Announce the investigations, motherfucker!” When confronted with this, Pompeo glared, and said, “That’s just a reminder to myself to ask my wife to investigate whether we have milk at home.” The Secretary of State glared for another few moments at reporters, and then stalked off.
