Pew: Voting Divide Grows Over Size Of Government | Talking Points Memo

As the 2012 presidential race focuses on the size and scope of government, a poll released Monday by Pew Research Center shows the link between voters’ views on the matter and which candidate they support is stronger than it has been in decades. Many campaigns have been colored by a debate over the responsibility of the government, and there has long been a correlation between voters’ interpretations on the issue and which way they lean politically. But that relationship has grown even more pronounced in 2012, as this year’s presidential race has been defined by conflicting views on the role of government. According to Pew, voters’ views on the size of government are now more closely related to electoral preferences than previous election cycles dating back to 1976.
