True story: They’re all paper records, a least the ones that exist. They tried to digitize them once, but that effort was blocked by Republicans in Congress, with fierce lobbying by the NRA. That any guns are ever traced at all is a miracle.

My question is legitimate. As someone who has gone through the federal background check in the US to purchase a firearm, I am interested to know, based on @Zemod’s comment, if data on gun ownership in the US is digitized?

ETA: The last I’ve seen on the subject is that they were not allowed by law to be digitized. This is not a subject I follow closely.

I believe many of the databases related to firearms purchases are at the state level. In New York State, obtaining a pistol permit is state run, highly prescribed, at least a six month process. The background checks, fingerprinting, references (four who’ve known you for five or more years and in the same county), the mandatory gun safety course, etc are all state run.
