House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Thursday described her meeting with President Trump as a “meltdown” and said she was likely “excusing” herself from the room or telling Trump that “all roads lead to Putin” when an iconic photo of the gathering was snapped.
In that picture, the general to Trump’s right has very clear body language…he’s holding back from showing anything or making a comment, but very stiff in disagreement. It’s not aimed at Pelosi, if it was he would be looking at her like Mnuchin is. I think that makes it pretty clear how the military feels about the Syria situation, and they also feel hemmed in by the president’s bad behavior.
Things are only going to get worse between the Democrats and Trump from here, he’s going to be the stubborn grandpa who refuses to listen while the Democrats follow the law and facts in the investigation. He knows he’s in trouble, and all he can do is hit back and try to hurt them as he goes down. We’re in for an ugly few months of politics.
If the Democrats are smart they made their own recording of the meeting, as they should of every meeting going forward. I don’t know if that’s necessarily legal, so they may not be able to produce the recordings, but having it for themselves to refer to is a good idea.
Or, they can just let Trump keep releasing things that damage himself…it’s like he’s got a machine gun aimed at his foot.
“Trump apparently told the room he pulled the U.S. troops out of Syria to fulfill his campaign promise to bring the troops home. Pelosi claims she retorted by questioning why U.S. troops remained in Saudi Arabia and Trump admitted it was because the country was paying the U.S. for them.”
So, our all-volunteer armed services are now a mercenary force; soldiers of fortune sent into harm’s way on behalf of the highest bidder.
Disgusting.
I can’t imagine what else the White House is going to release in the coming weeks that they think looks strong or exculpatory but is actually woefully weak and outright incriminating. But there have at least three so far (off the top of my head, the partial “transcript”, the letter, and the photo), and it’s a safe bet there will be more.
