[Speaker Pelosi] seemed to be embracing the idea of shortening the duration of programs within the reconciliation package rather than chopping them out wholesale to bring down the overall price tag, a notion that’s been gaining steam in the Senate.
This’ll work - full spigot for shorter duration is much, much better than dribs and drabs over a ten year period.
Also, let’s push to add an extra year or two into the Black Lung benefits renewal …
So it comes down to this. Either pass a smaller package acceptable to Sinema and Manchin or pass nothing at all. Period. Full stop. We can complain about the two “moderate” senators if we wish, but they are not going to change their position and unlike the Republicans, the Democrats will not punish recalcitrant Senators. So take the (smaller) win, keep control of Congress, add more Democratic Senators in 2022, and bring it back up when you have the leverage.
Shortening the years rather than paring down the scope will be the Guardians Of Plutocrats’ greatest fear. Once programs become popular they are much harder to kill off.
OTOH, if Rethugliklans regain control, they’ll be killing off the entire country, rendering the point moot.

Exactly. Which is why the folks in charge will do everything in their power to avoid that compromise. Manchin has already indicated that he wants Dems to choose and only move forward with some, not all, of the proposed programs.
Pelosi up to her old - and only - trick. Pressuring her progressive caucus to accept the gruel shoved down their throats by their corporate-corrupted colleagues.
I just checked to see how Sinema did in the Boston Marathon.
She didn’t run.
“While Kyrsten qualified for and attended the race, she could not run because of her continued recovery from a broken foot,” her office said in a statement.
How’s that old saying go: ”I think we’ve established what Manchin and Sinema are; now, we’re just haggling over the price.”

Sinema has plenty of ability to change her positions, so long as the new position is one that is embraced by the lobbyists and wealthy donors she talks to.
For K-Street propagandists, the game in recent decades has mostly been about playing on what a person should hate about the other side. Trumpsters hate non-Trumpsters, e.g. “woke communists” and everybody else hates Trumpsters, e.g. “christian nationalist fascists”. The give-and-take happens within your own bubble. To me, this is what is so pathetic about the Marcellus Shale’s attempt to pretend it can be a human in the form of Joe Manchin. At nearly 400 hundred million years old, it needs an update about how the world works. You know, if it stays in the ground a few million more years, it’s not that big a deal. It’s time for the Marcellus Shale to get over itself and let the humans living on top of it have better access to properly paid care for the elderly and infirm, and maybe some fucking daycare! I know, the Marcellus Shale’s biggest worry is decarbonization of the economy, but in the end very little carbon is created or destroyed on the planet. Carbon atoms are very adaptable and an entire branch of chemistry is devoted to them.
If she hadn’t been caught out with her foot “issue” which allowed her to meet with donors, dollars to donuts she’d’ve run it. Bad optics after she got caught out.
Nancy tells the media they didn’t sell it enough:
“Well, I think you all could do a better job of selling it, to be very frank with you,” said at a daily press briefing with reporters, in response to a question about the proposal. “Because every time I come here I go through the list, family medical leave, climate, the issues that are in there.
“It is hard to break through when you have such a comprehensive package,” She added. “But as we narrow it down and put it out there I think that — for example, one of the things in the bill is the continuation of the Biden tax credit, the child tax credit that is within the rescue package. That has great appeal. Do people know where it springs from? No, but it is a vast bill. It has a lot in it and we will have to continue to make sure the public does. But whether they know what or not, they overwhelming we support it. And by the way, women much more than men.”
If only we could cut out any money that would go to Arizona or West Virginia to bring the topline number down closer to Sinema’s and Manchin’s liking.
If so, than she is seething right now. Qualifying for Boston is a big deal (you can’t just sign up, you have to run a fast enough time in another marathon).
