Georgia’s experience after restricting migrant work is a lesson writ large for the nation today. Why in the hell would employers want to hire people that are forced to take the jobs to keep their Medicaid, and their volume of production half (or less) of the migrants they replace? Do Medicaid recipients living in downtown Atlanta, subject to new work requirements, have public transportation to and from crop fields? Or do they get there in the car they maintain and insure, a car they own in lieu of eating and paying rent? Just how many Medicaid and SNAP recipients are even logistically situated to harvest fruits and vegetables? Are they all supposed to move nearer the fields?

Even the right rural settings! Lots of red hat supervisors live in rural settings. It should make the barracks at the meat packing plant ”at a reasonable price” an even more attractive option!

An Iowa jury on Wednesday awarded a total of $240 million to 32 mentally disabled Iowa turkey processing plant workers for what government lawyers described as years of around-the-clock abuse and discrimination by the Texas company that oversaw their care, work and lodging.
The employees lived at a rural Iowa bunkhouse under Henry’s care while they worked at the West Liberty Foods turkey processing plant, which paid Henry’s to supply them under a contract that dated to the 1970s. West Liberty Foods is not accused of any wrongdoing.
According to social workers who treated them after the home was shuttered, the men said they had been subjected to harsh discipline and abuse at home and work by their Henry’s supervisors. They said they had been forced to work through illness and injuries, denied bathroom breaks, locked in their rooms, kicked in the groin and, in one case, handcuffed to a bed. Supervisors also subjected the men to random acts of cruelty, such making them eat hot peppers, “just for laughs,” Canino said.

In the meantime, another new development suggests that the United States does have control over the detainees it sent to CECOT. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was working on a since-botched deal to exchange about 250 Venezuelan migrants that the U.S. has deported to El Salvador for several Americans and dozens of political prisoners held in Venezuela, the NYT reports.
Absolutely nothing anyone in this administration says anywhere, including under oath in a courtroom, can be trusted or taken in good faith. They deserve no benefit of any doubt and if SCOTUS hasn’t figured this out, it’s because nothing they decide can be taken at face value either.
We can withstand a corrupt Executive Branch or a corrupt SCOTUS, but it’s a very difficult task when both entities are completely and prima facie corrupt.

I feel like I’m living in a cartoon or a reality tv show. Those in authority seem to have no awareness of what embodied living is. Nutrition, shelter, rest, meaningful work: none of these are necessary in the cognitive world of the disembodied. Whether the Supremes, the executive, the congress; all weave incantations out of th ether with no sense of the effects on embodied organisms such as ourselves, or any other living thing. They seem to live in total isolation from lived life, questioning neither their own assumptions or lived experience.

I don’t know enough about him to call him worthless, and IIRC he hasn’t been Speaker yet. But we really, really need people who understand the moment and are ready to meet it…and get very resourceful and creative. For all of Pelosi’s skills and stature…she was no movement leader or marketing wiz. I really, really hoped he would be.
