Hello, and welcome back to The Franchise The Missouri gerrymandering fight felt a lot like old-school Republican politics: boring, procedural trickery to rig the systems of government in their favor. Denny Hoskins, the normal-seeming Republican Secretary of State, sidestepped the provision of the Missouri constitution that lets citizens bring new legislation to a statewide referendum…
Kate’s post is so important, because it highlights this salient fact: Republicans have been trying to hijack the vote and any civil rights and civil liberties protections for over 60 years. It is the same party it was back then, it’s just that the corruption is now out in the open, exaggerated for all to see.
They were opposed to the Civil rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare and Medicaid, They are vile creatures and they MUST be defeated in November. All hands on deck.
Old school Republicans ending American democracy is conservative?
Does this mean I can no longer trust Chuck Grassley?
AES’s ad is hilarious! And spot on. As I was born and raised in Michigan, I have a soft spot for my home state.
When could you?
The California Supreme Court is forcing Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco — a MAGA nut with ties to the far-right constitutional sheriff movement and the Oath Keepers — to return roughly 650,000 ballots he seized after the November 2025 special election.
And this fascist will spend how long in jail for election interference?
Does California not have a law that it’s a criminal act for a random, unauthorized person to seize and carry away ballots? Is that not a felony in California? Does California not have a state law enforcement agency and state prosecutors? Where is Arnold when you need him?
Two years ago Missourians passed a pretty liberal abortion rights citizen initiatve change to the Missouri constitution overturning the law passsed by the Republican anti abortion legislature. That law frosted Republican politicians. This year Republicans put an amendment on the ballot they claimed was about transgender treatment. A fair reading of the amendment disclosed language repealing abortion rights. The Missouri Court of Appeals in Kansas City required the ballot langage to be changed to clearly point out that change. Good old fashioned Republicans in Missouri are pieces of shit who don’t hesitate to screw Missourians. They will continue to do so as long as there is no party oppositioin in the state. Citizens keep passing popular liberal ballot measures but so far the national Democratic party has refused to challenge the corrupt Republican establishment.
So far California AG Bonta has only threatened prosecution.
Useless, empty threats are maybe the worst possible thing to do about a guy like this. Election’s over. Lock him up before some statute of limitations runs out.
Some above in this thread said what several have said here in TPM now for couple of years: A subset of Republicans have been planning this for 60 years. Looking back, I sense that Saint Ronnie was their first attempt at autocracy, but he was too civil-minded to be corrupted more than he had become – I think – mostly naively with a head stuffed like a ragbag with RW horse shit.
Denny Hoskins is far from a normal Republican. He was part of the Freedom Caucus when he was in the Missouri. His fellow Frredom Caucus members were the ones who sued Hoskins into Federal Appeals court. All with wink and a nod.
The current Missouri Attorney General is Catherine Hanaway. She seemed a fairly normie Republican, but she has gone full MAGA since being appointed.
The Texas DPS portal does not allow people to register to vote. It allows already-registered voters to update their voter registrations at the same time they update their driver’s licenses for matters like name and address changes. You can also generate and print out a voter registration form with all your data on it from the Secretary of State website, but you still have to mail that form into your registrar or deliver it in person.
They know they can’t win fairly, so they cheat. The same old story….oh, and a question for the “Secretary of War”; is JD Vance a “wierdo” or a “beardo”?
I was going to make the same point. I lived in the MO House District Hoskins represented. He was attending Tea Party rallies. To show how normal he was, I encountered on the street one day and asked him, if he was pro-life, to support Medicaid expansion. His response was priceless: Let Obama do it. Now he either demonstrated his stupidity about Medicaid expansion or he was trying to be cute. There has never been anything normal about Hoskins’ politics.
