Thank you @valgalky23. Excellent summary.
The Twinkie defense. I remember it well. But Karma had her way in the end. After he was released from jail, he committed suicide. Left a wife and child. Too fking bad. Moscone had a wife and four children and an unlimited progressive political career in front of him. Milk was probably going to go on to state politics. The county board’s always been a stepping stone.
This tragedy also brought Dianne Feinstein, who discovered Milk’s body, to our attention; she became the mayor, then ran for the senate, and she’ll always have my thanks for how she managed her grief and all San Franciscan’s grief afterward.
Mea culpa . . .
back in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s the ATF went to some gun shows and sold illegal hand grenade components as a sting operation (probably thought the Weather Underground would come and buy some). Instead "normal’ gun nuts bought them and were then visited in the night by armed ATF officers with no knock warrants. Not too surprisingly, this resulted in some shooting and a guy (I forget his name but it was something like Balu or Belew) got shot, and I believe, paralyzed defending his home. The NRA went on and on about that for years, but then it was a white guy. Also, as some do not know, the NRA supported and Ronald Reagan signed into law California’s very stringent gun laws as a direct result of The Black Panthers openly carrying weapons in their own neighborhoods and to various Government buildings. This made “whitey” very nervous,as you can imagine.
