The New York Times has an answer to a mystery first launched by Ukrainian financial disclosures last week.
Expect Trump to order Barr to petition the SCOTUS to vacate Manafort’s convictions on the basis that they are “Fruit of the poisoned tree” all stemming from Flynn’s dropped prosecution.
Same thing with Roger Stone’s cases.
He will let Micheal Cohen do all of HIS time as punishment for “ratting out” Trump.
Then, by August, both Flynn and Manafort will be back working in the White House.
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving firm than Skadden.
Skadden now.
Yes, in recent decades the firm has made some lousy compromises.
I am, so to speak, familiar with their work.
Skadden is not a “white-shoes law firm.” It is a very profitable firm whose partners make a ton of money, but it’s willing to adopt tactics no white-shoes law firm would ever attempt.
“White shoe” does not imply moral or ethical probity. It just means they’re big and old, usually based in NYC, and rarely representing any clients except for very large businesses and the uber-rich.
ETA: If anything, Skadden doesn’t qualify for the description because it’s not old enough.
Eleven mil? That’s pocket change to a firm like Skadden.
And the $11 million went to the Trump re-election campaign as a donation?
That’s usually how things like this work. Now…
Craig was later prosecuted – and acquitted – of lying to the Justice Department about his role in disseminating the report
.Another privileged White Man gets the low Barr treatment.
Yeah, but shit like this hurts recruiting.
ETA: Whoops, that shoulda been a reply to @bankerpup. Sorry for any confusion.
Too late…
Well, if it does gobble up all the $$ Manafort brought in ($4m according to the article?) at least it still serves a goal of making him not look like much of a rainmaker
Forgive me, but I have NO idea what happened here.
Am I the only one confused?
White shoe law firm Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom
When did Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel leave the firm?
NYT article is much clearer
"Skadden paid $11 million or more to settle the case before a lawsuit was filed, according to people familiar with the settlement. Funds from the settlement appear to have been passed through Reid Collins to Ms. Tymoshenko and Mr. Vlasenko.
That arrangement appears to be reflected in records filed by Ms. Tymoshenko and Mr. Vlasenko with the Ukrainian government, which show that they each received about $5.5 million from Reid Collins between July and last month."
This year’s law school grads will be grateful to land a job. Next year’s won’t remember.
A lot of them, sure. But upper-crust law school grads and outgoing federal law clerks who make up Skadden’s usual recruiting class are going to end up somewhere, and it will probably still be someplace like Skadden.
Remember when King & Spalding briefly got into the business of trying to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act, then beat a hasty retreat because of all the negative attention? That was all about negative client blowback and harm to its recruiting efforts. This is probably much less harmful than that example, but it still hurts.
Skadden agreed to pay 4.6mil back in January 2019. It was all over the news at the time. The lead partner was charged with lying to the feds, got acquitted.
Did this hurt Skadden last year?
A distinct possibility.
It’s also a possibility that, by August '21, Barr will be under indictment, and Kushner, too. GOTV. In person, if necessary.
