Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) on Tuesday picked apart boasts from the Trump administration about COVID-19 testing capacity in the United States, saying that it was “nothing to celebrate” and that early mistakes had led to thousands of deaths.
Thanks for the good words, Mitt. Now can you go talk to your daughter who feels the need to defend Dear Leader with even the most inane compliments around?
This is actually a good sign…Mitt is continuing to stand up to Trump no matter what gets thrown at him. It’s giving space to others to do the same, and as Trump’s campaign falters it will allow more and more Republicans to pull away. That helps Biden, though the separation may help Republicans do better in the Senate races if they really step away from Trump…but I don’t think the key races are going to go their way, at this point the Senate does look like it will swing.
Quite honestly, I’ll take anyone who will help clearly point out reality right now.
Go Mittens.
This was well said:
“Yesterday, you celebrated that we had done more tests, and more tests per capita even, than South Korea,” Romney said. “But you ignored the fact that they accomplished theirs at the beginning of the outbreak, while we treaded water during February and March, and as a result, by March 6, the U.S. had completed just 2,000 tests whereas South Korea had conducted more than 140,000 tests.”
“Partially as a result of that,” Romney said, “they have 256 deaths and we have almost 80,000 deaths.”
“I find our testing record nothing to celebrate whatsoever,” the senator added.
In the past, Romney has been far too tepid in his criticism, so for this I applaud him, especially since his dissembles Donnie’s flimsy arguments rather than offering more generalized criticism. Romney needs to criticize like this more forcefully and more often.
I will totally celebrate Sen. Romney’s admonition to the Admiral, and this foolish administration. Yes, he has shown some squishiness and awkwardness in the past. But he has more spine than any republican senator. With the understanding that’s a low bar… but still. I appreciate his upbraiding of them all.
