WASHINGTON (AP) — The captain of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier facing a growing outbreak of the coronavirus is asking for permission to isolate the bulk of his roughly 5,000 crew members on shore, which would take the warship out of duty in an effort to save lives.
Bless them all. Good job, Captain Crozier, for trying to do what is right for your sailors. I hope your superiors listen to you.
And thanks to the “U.S. Navy Official” who leaked this story so the Trump Administration can’t bury it (literally or figuratively).
This is terrifying. Good on the Captain however, for putting his men and women in front of his career.
“It will enable the carrier and air wing to get back underway as quickly as possible while ensuring the health and safety of our sailors,” Crozier said.

I’m glad it leaked before the afternoon performance, so someone can ask him about it and watch him lie, deflect, and refer it to others. Or he just calls the reporter nasty for questioning him.
MSNBC is reporting on this. They’re testing every sailor, but the testing is not effective. They could test negative in the morning and actually have it later in the day.
What a mess. Close quarters and all surfaces can’t possibly be cleaned well enough every day. Ugh.

My dad spent 20 years in the Navy. I am stunned that they haven’t been working to dock & offload crew. Those ships are deathtraps.
