Leaving the cake thing aside, she was still a member of the Ancien regime.
That she was, but not the worst specimen.
Yep. People underestimate how much independence is valued in Maine politics. It’s been steadily eroding since the rise of LePage and Trump, but it’s still there. It’s what got Collins elected in the first place and her reputation has kept her going long after she abandoned it. Reality catching up is reflected in the stark turnaround in her popularity. She’s won re-election up til now with big margins among independents and lots of Democrats. Even my very liberal parents voted for her in 2006 despite my pointing out she was a Bush toady by that point. They finally turned against her in 2014 when she won more narrowly, and now the mention of her name is enough to send my mother off on a rant. Sucking up to Trump was really the last straw for a lot of people.
Well,I for one am concerned, disappointed, and troubled, over Susan Collins reelection prospects. Not!!!
As of late May Gideon was beating Collins
51 to 42 among likely voters per 538.
As of March Biden was beating Trump by 10 points. I doubt Trump’s numbers have improved since then.
Collins ought to be concerned.
Ah. So fairly typical “Why vote for a Republican when you can vote for a Republican Lite?”
2016 has made that a.compelling.argument.
This is from a letter I sent to Collins after she voted to acquit Trump.
You are unworthy of the mantle of Senator Margaret Chase Smith. Unlike you, Senator Smith would have denounced President Trump’s behavior in the strongest terms. You had the opportunity to issue a declaration of conscience. Instead you issued another declaration of cowardice, with the ludicrous excuse that the President’s actions did not meet the standard for impeachable conduct.
You are a disgrace to Maine, to the Senate, and to the standard of Margaret Chase Smith. Maine voters deserve better than your sniveling excuses for not holding the President accountable for his many misdeeds in office. You have sacrificed your reputation for thoughtful independence to the worst president in 100 years, and that will be your legacy.
I wonder if her two-faced political stances are matched by a two-faced personality. In public she plays the sweet and slightly dim favorite aunt who wants to give you a cookie. In private, I bet she’s a short-tempered nutjob who terrifies her staff and berates them over the slightest mistake, taking out her anger on them even when it’s not their fault, kind of like Trump, except he’s an asshole in public and doesn’t even try to pretend otherwise.
In any case, I think these are her final months in office.
She looked into his soul and found more than just beer and spittle. She found lots of RNC money too.
I was wondering what happened to that money. Has she gotten it, yet? There has been no followup.
And you’re still being a pedant. Touché.
And didn’t vote to convict on impeachment. May we remember all their names…
The Maine primary is on July 14th. The money goes to the winner of the primary which, by every indication, will be Sara Gideon.
The Crowdpac fundraiser is still live if anyone’s interested:
Current balance is over $4.1 million!
Brioche because that’s the word she was first said to have used.
Not cake. Not bread. But brioche.
Except that it’s all much ado about nothing, because there’s no evidence that she actually said “Let them eat [whatever].”
I actually thought at one time she might switch parties. She could have ran well as a Democrat in Maine. She seems to have gotten more stealthily conservative since she got married. Her and Olympia Snowe used to be two peas in a pod. Those days are long gone.
Collins is a demonstration of the way Trump’s GOP has been destroying moderates. She can’t get Republican votes if she stands up to Trump and draws his tweeting ire or Fox’s faux outrage. She can’t get moderate or independent votes if she doesn’t.
Same here, but that was more than a decade ago.
Could the Democrats have done more to make it happen? I don’t know, but I suppose we could ask Tom Daschle or Harry Reid.
She was Hapsburg.
24 years in the Senate is enough. Take her out in November.
