You gotta hit 'em where it hurts. They’ve got no balls so the next best place is the wallet. Nothing brings a politician to their knees like an empty campaign bank account.
The Masters Tournament is sponsored by AT&T, Delta, UPS and Mercedes Benz .
Frankly I’m surprised various minority organizations haven’t called for exactly this type of move to be made.
Why do you think there will be a labor stoppage?
I’m reminded SNL once presented a list on Weekend Update about “Why blacks don’t play hockey.” The Number One reason (written by usually unfunny Adam Sandler) was: “They find no need to dominate yet another sport.”
Yes, almost 30% are foreign born. That’s why I qualified it by those who actually voted. The international players tend to be more apolitical, as far as I can tell.
The Braves should change their name to The Georgia White Flights.
The discrimination and persecution well meaning white people have to contend with is outrageous.
The problem with a Coke boycott, besides the fact that Coke drinkers no doubt skew GQP, is that Coke has hundreds of brands of all kinds of drinks and food (or food like) products.
Axe throwing?
Surfing?
Darts?
I know of a Bocce ball court in Queens. It’s quite popular during the warmer weather.
Polo, yachting, jousting . . .
This law …this restriction on our most basic right … to vote affects my family as I have cousins in Athens, GA who are pissed about this.
And on another level the diversity within MLB was affected in the 1940’s by my great-grandfather who was Kenesaw Mountain Landis … the first Commissioner of MLB (1920-1944). The family story I heard growing up was KML was gonna keep integration of baseball from happening. The quote in the story was “Jackie Robinson will not get in Major League Baseball and if he does it’ll be over my dead body”. And that is exactly what happened. Landis died in 1944 and that opened the way for Jackie to gain entry.
KM Landis was, prior to 1920 a federal judge known for a very strict courtroom. Once a thief who was conviced of robbery was before Judge Landis and he said “But judge, I am 75 years old!”. Judge Landis’ reply was (as told to me by my dad who told me these stories and who knew the Judge quite well)…" Well you shoulda thought of that before you committed this crime. Your sentence stands!"
This image was in my bedroom when I was a kid. I think Landis never stopped scowling even when having fun.
The other baseball angle for me was our miniscule “town” (population about 450 when everybody was home) was it was the lifelong home of Walter “Smokey” Alston who managed the Dodgers from 1948 and into the 1970’s. He was a friend to me. Thru him I got to meet many of the 1950’s and 1960’s Dodgers players. Jackie Robinson was one. That happened in the mid 1950’s when the Dodgers won the World Series and they all came to visit Smokey at his home. And a parade was held which I will never forget.
Is there anything more hypnotic than curling? I don’t know why but whenever it’s on TV I simply can’t stop watching it. I’m wonder if there’s subliminal messaging involved, perhaps to convince people that living in cold climates doesn’t suck.
(Full disclosure: I was born 7 miles north of Tijuana, Mexico. Thus, 76° is perfect. Seventy-seven is too hot; 75° is too cold.)
Peaches?
Darts
Curling cats is even better.
I say it because most MLB players who have voiced any kind of political opinions have supported the GOP. I don’t mean to claim that they’re any kind of deep thinkers on the subject, but Curt Schilling is probably closer to the mean than you might expect.
The only way to make it to the big leagues is by dedicating your life to the sport. In Latin America, that means getting into one of the many MLB-supported baseball academies. In the USA, it means having parents with enough money to put you through high-level league play, travel, and training. That more or less self-selects from a more conservative player pool.
And yeah, a lot of the players’ thinking doesn’t go much deeper than “Republicans will cut my taxes.” They’re athletes, not poli sci majors. They’re also a group of majority white men, so there’s that too.
ETA: And unless you’re living on first-round draft bonus money, you have to be able to afford to live on minor league starvation wages while the MLB club decides whether you get a shot at the big leagues. That again self-selects for more affluent Americans (and more desperate non-citizens).
OK so the stand up reporter’s hand gesture when describing “the home owner only saw the color of their skin” is just bizarre.
Montgomery Bus Boycott for the 21st century. Thats the way to make these racists listen.
