I donāt buy that as an argument. It seems that when nut jobs need to be dealt with the hands are off but when people are ālegitimatelyā protesting, as had been the case all of 2020, the swords come out.

In addition, there was recent bad precedent where overuse of the military prompted massive outrage.

Iāve been to the capitol building several times and I always carry bear spray and wear military style garb. Itās just what one does when visiting our nationās capitol. 
edit to add that I always try to insult or beat at least one capitol police person, preferable a black female if I can locate one.
