25% of Americans are so fucking ignorant that they will believe ANYTHING that reinforces their pre-existing bigotries, and makes them feel like HEROS instead of the dead-enders they really are.
This fact has been exploited by foreign governments and Oligarch-funded think tanks to a degree that was not possible before the existence of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram (and the Chinese government-controlled TikTok.)
Social Media has done more damage to the United States of America than any other invention in history because of the destruction of our educational system by the Fascist Oligarchs, beginning in 1974 as a reaction to the pitiful end to the Nixon Administration. A significant portion of the country has access to Social media, with no ability to filter out the bullshit, and with 5 decades of propaganda to condition them to accept the most outrageous thing said about everyone they see as a cause of their petty grievances (massively amplified by Social Media.)
This is why the politics of division are so powerful and so deeply imbedded in the body politic. It is a cheap, simple way to exploit the divisions that usually percolate below the surface of civility.
