MI Secretary Of State Bans Open Carry Of Guns At Polling Places On Election Day

Definitely. Really, all the governors need to consider doing this. Not just swing states. All of them, Katie. While the assumption is that these jackasses will only show up in certain states, many of them will simply opt for their local polling place even in very safe states for either Trump or Biden.

I am so glad that I live in a vote by mail state. This year drop boxes will be watched by security folks to cut down on any shenanigans.

A friend was in San Francisco yesterday and said that there was a massive police presence for blocks around a drive through voting station. Police on foot, in cars, on bikes. I think that means that at least in that city, the mayor demands a fair election and the police are there to reinforce that.

This is after all the USA, goddamnit. It’s freedom, not tyranny. To quote those nasty people who favored the Vietnam War, love it or leave it.

I have a hunch that we are not the only people on our side who know about and are concerned with election security.

I hope she’s safe now in her undisclosed location.

How can we possibly have a free and fair election if Rs aren’t allowed to bring their ARs and AKs into polling places to enforce, at gunpoint, freeness and fairdom on whatever traitors might otherwise be inclined to vote against our president?.

My question is why wouldn’t they, what rationale could there be for wondering if they would, beyond what I think is a ridiculous and evidence-free belief by way too many that the Democrats are all these cowering poltroons who won’t “fight” and so forth? I don’t care how often someone says it, there’s little or no evidence that it’s a thing. In 2018 these lily-livered Democrats delivered a blue wave nationally after a long, determined, what’s that word oh yeah fight to resist all this bullshit. Then they kept, again, fighting. I don’t know if you read the polls. Did you hear about the impeachment? No? Swear to God they did that too. There are a bunch of kidnap-curious militia idiots sitting in prison right now rethinking their life choices, the governor yelled at the damn president of the United States for stirring them up, and the secretary of state just said oh fuck no you’re not bringing guns to the polls. Where do you see this lack of willingness to fight, exactly?

Stay calm. This is not new. Black folk faced this kind of nonsense countless times before. It’s what scared, desperate white men and boys do when nothing else comes to mind. Just carry on and resist.

Because elections are run by the states.

There are no truly federal elections.

Exactly! I know this is slightly different but a police officer family member of mine, here in WA, was shown a picture of Proud Boys showing off their guns at a BLM rally and his response was that they were doing nothing wrong. Carrying the guns was within their rights. He was correct but he also equates carrying the guns to someone carrying a purse or backpack. Just as mundane and that the fear of the weapons was an issue for the people bothered by the weapons.

I expect nothing less from most police departments when being called out for something like this.

I’m sure the local police will check with the democratic campaign HQ before taking any action.

That’s what this ban addresses. The SOS explicitly said you can’t carry them near the polls so that people can vote without being feeling intimidated or threatened. It takes the legality away and says why. I think the ban was made with the clear expectation that law enforcement would enforce the damn law.

I’m torn between Meal Team 6, the Gravy Seals, and Y’all Qaeda as a moniker for these sorts…

I don’t get it. These gun guys are routinely mocked here as “ammosexuals” compensating for a certain type of physical shortcoming and so forth, but the instant they’re told keep the artillery away from the polls people assume they’re going to go on this apocalyptic killing spree. Folks, it’s either one or the other, and I think for the vast majority it’s the one. One thing many folks who’ve never bought a gun don’t realize is if you have a serious enough history of issues with impulse control you’re likely as well to have a criminal record that keeps you from buying guns at most places in the first place or owning them legally at all. They’re not going to freak out. They’re going to stay 100 feet away. They like their guns and they like their freedom and 99 percent of them won’t do anything to jeopardize that.

The problem is that for many Americans “massive police presence” does not equal “I am safe”. If unjust policing is one of the issues being voted on (and it should be), police presence at the polls will discourage precisely those voters who have been most disadvantaged by the current power structure.

But armed random at the polls is worse and I don’t know what other alternatives there are (I think. I’d welcome input from posters who have experienced biased policing).

Fox. GOP. NRA. Smith & W …

Yup. The vast majority are responsible about their gun rights, and quite leery of doing anything dumb that would result in their ARs taken away prior to the inevitable apocalypse.
