Of course McConnell doesn’t want to attend(!). He’s not going to risk his life for the greater glory of Donald Trump. My guess, he’s just waiting for enough prominent R’s to announce their non-attendence that he’s taken off of the hook without leading the pack, and can look as if he’s just following the consensus of his majority.

That is IMHO overstating his actual support. Lots of junk polls in that number.
IBD/TIPP (one of the better on line A/B) pollsters has him at 37% approval, 56% approval (-19) and IBD is generally one of the better polls for him. June 4 they had 42% approve, 52% disapprove (-10), May 1, they had him at 44% approve, 44% disapprove (even), and April 6 they had it 45% all (even). All of these were better for Trump than high quality live opperator polls.
My best guess is that he is probably setting at about 36% approval, 60% disapproval right now.
PPP has Trump down 46/50 (+4 Biden) in North Carolina, and Trump up 48/45% (+3 Trump) in Alaska. Let that sink in, Trump is under 50% in Alaska and only leading by 3%.
Trump is rapidly taking on water, and the more crazy he does about covid-19, and as the number spike, expect further loss of support.

I think that you are right on target. As I’ve noted in other posts, COVID and Black Lives protests are two major, ongoing events that are taking all of the oxygen out of Trump’s political space and are utterly uncontrollable by resorting to his usual modes of misdirection and distraction.

What delegates, business leaders, and other GOP bigwigs will attend if McConnell won’t commit? Nobody will wait until the last minute to “see if it’s safe,” and the convention planners can’t plan a convention when they don’t know who is coming. So this is probably the death knell for an in-person convention.
Trump will still insist on a MAGA rally coronation of course, but it won’t have any meaningful GOP participation. All the convention biz will be handled online.

Yup, and he is a lead weight around republicans necks. PPP was polling Alaska because someone paid them to contact 1081 alaskans. They found Sullivan - who is a total zero of a senator, elected in 2014, is at 39% and the “independent” Dr. Gross running against him is at 34%. To only be up 5%, and at 39% as an incumbent is a really dangerous place to go. Some more covid-19, another couple of crazy Trump events (almost certain to happen) and Dan Sullivan may find himself out of the senate.
And Don Young (R, AK, at large) is at 41% with the democrat Galvin at 43%. (+2 D).

That was near the height of the bounce he got pretending they were doing something. All the trend lines diverge sharply after that. And I don’t see a lot of good news in the pipeline for him.

It’s as significant and meaningful as one could hope for that important republicans are in back of the Lincoln Project including the husband of the White House Talking Wench, George Conway. Others are the guys who ran republican candidates’ campaign including Schmidt for McCain and Stuart Stevens who worked for bush and Dole.
Democrats coming out with pistols blazing against trumP, predictable. Long time mostly moderate repubs blasting him, something entirely different. But there are left leaning PACS runnings ads against trumPP including Priorities USA.
This is the Lincoln Project’s philosophy: “We’ve never backed a Democrat for president. But Trump must be defeated.”
But let’s continue to eat our own. That’s always worked in the past.

I agree with everything that you wrote here.
All that said the Lincoln project and all the fandom we give them here reminds me an awful lot of the democratic tendency to choose a Republican for FBI director (Mueller/Comey) or for SecDef (Gates) like we couldn’t find a Democrat to do those jobs.
It’s a different thing I know, but it still shows how we let Republicans maintain respectability when they don’t deserve it.
Because in the end, a Republican will protect Republican ideals.
Lincoln project only cares because trump makes the party look bad and they want to save the rest of the party.

I surely think ReThuglican voters would dismiss their work as “partisan” “divisive” “political” “unpatriotic” if they were Democrats. It being their own… kinda makes 'em have to think three times, perhaps?
