McConnell has always been a hypocrite, and I accept that all politicians, even ones I like, are a little bit hypocritical to some extent. But McConnell and the Republicans have always been able to hide the hypocrisy behind some veneer of principle, however laughable, such as a president not being “allowed” to appoint a Supreme Court Justice during the last year of a term.
It looks like that McConnell made the calculation that he doesn’t even have to bother with the veneer, going back to Amy Coney Barrett. It also looks like he underestimated how important those thin bits of plausible deniability were to his agenda. People can handle cynical hypocrisy so long as you don’t rub their faces in it and McConnell seemed to forget that.
I’m also starting to think that we mistook his shamelessness for extraordinary political cunning for years. Now that the shamelessness has diminishing returns, or active blowback, he doesn’t know what to do. Hence the desperate flailing and threats of fire and brimstone and scorched earth. Which I’m sure plays well with people who actually want to see problems solved, a group that does include some conservatives.

It will be interesting to see how he responds if his wife gets indicted by DOJ for graft while she was Sec. of Trans. My guess is that she is as despicable as her husband and that permanent staffers kept careful records of everything she did while Sec.

There is more to McConnell’s hypocrisy, it is the hypocrisy of the corporations that have supported racists in the past, and now want a “do over” to say they do not support white supremacy.
Carleton Putnam became CEO of Delta and held a membership on its board until his death in 1998. His best-known book is entitled “Race and Reason: A Yankee View,” asking for segregation based on a letter he wrote to Dwight Eisenhower to stop the integration of American schools and overturning Brown vs Topeka Board of Education. He wrote in his book, “When the Negro has bred out his limitations over hundreds, or thousands, of years, it will be time enough to consider absorbing him in any such massive doses as would be involved in the South today.”
He stated “The mulatto who was bent on making the nation mulatto was the real danger. His alliance with the white equalitarian often combined men who had nothing in common save a belief that they had a grudge against society. They regarded every Southerner who sensed the genetic truth as a bigot […]. Here were the men who needed to be reminded of the debt the Negro owed to white civilization.
Delta has this racist as their past CEO and member of the Board until 1998, a man that thought it would take thousands of years before America could be integrated, with separation until that moment occurs. This is what racism is all about, men in power, who would never march at Charlottesville, but will use their power, community influence and political connections to promote white supremacy.

I think “publicly” is a key word – Mitch and Co. want the CEOs to be silent partners with deep pockets. Only the politicians get to be public figures. They’re stealing his limelight and opposing him. If it was 1790, he’d probably get somebody to challenge them to duels.
