McConnell On Senate Impeachment Trial: ‘I’m Not Impartial About This At All’ | Talking Points Memo

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) doubled down Tuesday on comments he made last week indicating he was heading into a Senate impeachment trial as a defender of President Trump.

Look at the expression on Trump’s orange face. I think either the drugs just kicked in or his constipation worries are behind him.

Aha! We have finally found the “Kangaroo Court,” and it is McConnell, and Graham, and, and, and . . . all of the Rethuglicans in the US Senate.

I am not an impartial juror.

The more obvious the crime, the more frivolous Republicans become, as a gambit to fool people into thinking something serious isn’t.

McConnell is weak on defense against Russia.

“I am not an impartial juror. This is a political process, there’s not anything judicial about it. Impeachment is a political decision,” McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Funny, I thought impeachment was a Constitutional process, and that the decision was to be based on the Congressional oath of office and the oath taken by members of the Senate in cases of impeachment:

Form of oath to be administered to the members of the Senate sitting in the trial of impeachments:
“I solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be,) that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of ___, now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws: so help me God.”

If impeached, senators will act as jurors in an impeachment trial and take an oath‘

I solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be) that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of [President Donald Trump], now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws: So help me God.’’

Ain’t gonna happen…

McConnell continues in his quest to be a stain on American history…he is on track to be considered one of the worst Congresspersons ever, and likely the worst majority leader. He has done so much to damage our political process in his pursuit of power for the Republican party that he has forgotten his job is to serve all Americans.

I really, really hope he is overplaying his hand here, and that he both loses his seat and Republicans lose the Senate over their obvious plan to cheat in the trial for Trump. They deserve to be out of power for decades due to how they are behaving, and how they are violating their oaths to the Constitution.

Thanks Mitch - at least the whole world knows that when Trump gets off in the Senate it won’t be because he has been exonerated. It won’t be because he was found innocent. It will just be because of you.

“I am not an impartial juror.”

To be fair, if he had said otherwise would anyone have believed him?

At least we take our jobs (as TPM commenters) seriously.

Brought to you by the same Putin pal who wiped his ass with the Constitution when it came to filling a vacant seat on the Supreme Court.

Mark me down as unsurprised.

McConnell doing this paints a Big Target on himself.

It’s almost too good to be true, how easy he’s making this for us.

I think that, since we Dems tend to overthink things, try to lock ALL the angles and look for (OUR) weaknesses, we get bogged down with doubt.

That is so much unlike Trumpism and, quite frankly, the Game McConnell is blustering to reporters:

The GOP and knows all their weaknesses and as opposed to “analyzing them”, chooses to fight tooth and nail for the GOP point of view to prevail, weaknesses and all.

But Trumpism, Trump and McConnell are on the wrong side of history. We just have to dust off our confidence (which took a severe hit on Nov. 2016) and bust these guys.

Go ahead, Addison. Be all in-your-face about it. We’ll shove your own face through the backside of your skull. How those internals look, bud?

The House should immediately pursue all subpoenas already issued, seek to add counts, and go to court to hold all Trump miscreants refusing to comply with subpoenas in contempt. They should deputized the DC police to arrest and imprison all these criminals until they testify.

Don’t send impeachment to Moscow Mitch. Wait until right before the election, with new counts.
