Another bit of data confirming that McConnell thinks Trump is going to lose control of the Republican party and that now is the time to start driving a wedge to separate Republicans from Trump and his minions. Quietly ignoring Trump is different from open defiance, especially on the 2020 election lie that Trump won.
The real question is what changed…Trump’s legal exposure isn’t any different, so my guess is either the unhinged direction Trump is driving the party is showing the Republicans losing badly, or else the Jan 6th committee is about to drop something so damaging that the sane Republicans are trying to separate themselves in the hopes they can hold onto power. I’m not sure what else would start this open defiance, especially after a year of kowtowing to Trump’s behavior. Whatever it is, it’s better for the nation to undo Trump’s control of the Republican party.
[…] McConnell continued. “If it’s bad for the country and bad for Republicans, I’m against it.”
“On the other hand, if it’s bad for the country but good for Republicans, like refusing to respond to clear Russian interference in an election, then I’m all for it.”
And to think, we would never be where we are if McConnell’s vote and his “statement” after the 2nd Impeachment vote had synced up and he had told the rest of his Caucus to do what was right, rather than what was political.
I think they’re not nearly as confident about winning the midterms as they appear to be. Their top Senate candidates are downright embarrassing. He may have made the political calculation that whether or not they do well now is the time to start the deTrumping.
