Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is joining in the chorus of conservative outrage over Nike’s recall of sneakers adorned with an image of the Betsy Ross American flag, due to its reverberations of an era of slavery.
Wouldn’t he be better off with their version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shoes? Maybe he should find out where they make those instead and order him up a pair.
“If we’re in a political environment where the American flag has become controversial to Americans, I think we’ve got a problem,” McConnell said.
We’re in a political environment where fake fealty to the flag is used as a cudgel and the ideals actually represented by the flag are nowhere to be seen in today’s republican party. Now go and shove those crocodile tears up your ass, Mitch.
Go to any NBA game. You’ll be hectored to rise and fall back into your seat so many times applauding various military and veterans groups in attendance, or there as special guests of the team, you’ll think you’re at a Catholic wedding. The environment is damned near that of a military recruitment commercial.
So now you are cool with making the flag an article of clothing. Got it Mitch. Hey Mitch, remember when y’all got all bent outta shape a few years back over disrespecting the symbol of our freedom?
Hypocrite.
Then again, who am I to say boo about freedom of expression? It’s just my personal point of view that the flag ought to be treated according to the rules of how to display it. I know I am being contrary. It’s just how I feel.
As someone on Twitter pointed out, “All the right-wingers are whining about a pair of shoes they’ll never buy. Meanwhile all the smart people buying Nike stock which, if history is any indication, will soon be rising.”
I hate McConnell as much as the next decent American, but I think Nike, and most of the comments here, have got it all wrong. If you want to argue that all flags are bad, go ahead and see where it gets you. If you want to argue that the American flag is bad, go ahead and get Trump re-elected, since that seems to be what you are in favor of. I really wonder how much of this is being joined by Russian trolls who are happy as clams.
No. good. can. come. from. this.
You do not get elected president of the United States by hating the United States and everything that it stands for and that stands for it. Period.
Heck, let’s go forward and rename the Washington Monument after Nat Turner. Let’s take down the White House and rebuild it as a series of teepees - - oh, but that would be cultural appropriation unless the President was native American.
Grow up, people. The Declaration of Independence was written by slaveholders. We know that. So do we throw it out? Life is more complex than a slogan on a bumper sticker. Dissent is patriotic, but hating America and everything about it and what it stands for and what stands for it . . . ? Grow up.
The NAACP chimed in that the flag had been appropriated by some white nationalist groups as a protest to America’s increasing diversification.
The real reason Nike pulled the shoe. They don’t want to have their highly visible shoes showing up at a Charlottesville rally on the feet of white supremacists.
