I thought Paul Ryan was less a compromise candidate than a pity candidate. No-one (except McCarthy) wanted McCarthy to be speaker, so they begged Ryan to run instead -and he agreed on the condition that he not have to fundraise (which is traditionally a big part of the job and one of the sources of the speakers’ power).
