McCarthy Now Seems To Say Social Security And Medicare Cuts Are ‘Off The Table’ In Debt Ceiling Negotiations

That hasn’t worked out for Grover, thank goodness, so the current GOP pack has just decided to try to storm the bathroom and cut the government’s throat.

The other the Rs ignore (and so does MSM) is that the debt still accumulates whether they lift the "debt ceiling’ or not. It’s just that the debt is to someone other than voluntary bond holders – like people wanting their tax refunds, defense contractors, social security recipients – and those debts don’t go away just because the Rs hold everyone hostage. So all they are really saying is payments get postponed regardless of the damage to the economy.

It’s for that reason that Biden should inform Congress and everyone else that he’s going to follow the Constitution and honor the country’s debts as it clearly says in the 14th Amendment no matter what Rs in Congress or even the Supreme Court says. Even SCOTUS cannot question the debt. If Congress doesn’t like it, they can impeach him. And if some other president decides NOT to follow the Constitution, that’s their choice.

I hadn’t realized that the sense of dread I had during the Trump Error had started to abate - until it came back this month when Conservative Terrorists took over the House again.

Agreed, but “unreasonable and irresponsible” is a feature not a bug for the GOP. I hear they’re trying to copyright “quite literally unreasonable and irresponsible” as the slogan of their brand.

Mc Carthy. . . “Stupid is as stupid does.” Forrest Gump, (Tom Hanks). Forest Gump, Paramount Pictures 1994.

“Let’s take those off the table,” McCarthy told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” when asked if he was considering any reductions to Social Security and Medicare.

Hey, did you see how all those trolls who spent the last several weeks screaming “Dems will cave!” at TPM spent this morning apologizing?

Yeah, me neither.

Probably not.
They’ll likely vote to suspend the debt ceiling until Sept. 30, so they can have a government shutdown/debt ceiling crisis all at one time to prove conclusively that they are not interested in governing, but are very interested in destroying the world economy.

McCarthy says “what I’m talking about Social Security, Medicare, you keep that to the side” but then immediately targets them with “what I want to look at is they’ve increased spending by 30%, $400 billion in four years.”

“If you read our commitment to America, all we talk about is strengthening Medicare and Social Security”

He thinks the American people have a very short memory, and don’t remember that to Republicans “strengthening” means private accounts, reduced benefits etc, which when explained people see as dismantling.

They want to “protect” social security, which is just political speak for privatize. Don’t fall for it!

How much did Trumpy increase spending during his 4 years, Mr. McCarthy? McCarthy will do whatever his fluff master tells him to do.

I watched McCarthy on Face the Nation for as long as I could tolerate, which wasn’t long. He was speaking manically, refusing to answer questions and blaming Schiff and Raskin for everything. Nothing he said was making any sense but he seemed to think that being animated about what he was saying was all he needed. He was either on meth or desperately worried about his position and future.

McCarthy then added, in his mind, FOR NOW. He will try to slide it in somewhere. He deals in bad faith.

McCarthy seems to say . . .

That’s the operative word followed by other words with just enough vagueness to cover any slashing the clown caucus insists on, something we all know is their true intent.

The interview McCarthy gave is a master class on deflection. Smiling and trying to sound pleasant as you completely speak around a toxic subject. George Santos, for instance. The comments are the GOP’s way of not saying anything that might nail them in the moment. Because like stealthy terrorists, they’ll come from behind to slit the country’s throat. All this gibberish about constituencies making their voice heard is a ruse bc Santos lied his ass off during the campaign, thereby deceiving his constituency. Also sounds as if he violated campaign finance law.

McCarthy knows that. We know that. Everything else is noise because McCarthy cannot afford to lose one vote. So be it for the Speaker’s principles.

Somewhat off-topic but I am pleasantly surprised that at least some media personalities are doing pushback on Republican tricks and misinformation. Trapper cornered Ron Johnson several week ago; Johnson, of course, cried foul, a true MAGA victim. Even Chuckles grew a spine and went after Jim Jordon yesterday.

Long, long overdue. We need that pushback on steroids.
