Thanks for the correction! I got the Senate and House schedules mixed up. I blame the third glass of cheap wine before dinner. Yeah, that’s it.
She placed 1st and won the NCAA championship the day before in the 500m. NONE of those who finished under her complained or filed suit
The day after her 5th place tie for 200m, she placed 8th in the 100m.
In the 500m, she was bested almost until the end, when she finally pulled away. Foreshadowing her performances in the 100m and 200m.
ETA: The reason Riley sued was because they let up to 6th place stand on the podium with their trophies. They only had one 5th place trophy. They gave it to Lia and gave Riley the 6th place and said they would send her a 5th place one. She was outraged that they "just gave it to Lia "
For Gaines, the decision to allow Thomas to hold the prize that day exemplified how trans athletes “were given a preferential treatment over females.”
“That’s when it hit me that no one else is going to speak out about this,” she said. “I’m not someone who’s scared.”
Dole out the blame to where it should sit. As I pointed out, he may not be blameless, but that area is notorious for deadly flash flooding. They had indications, warnings even. And that did not provide a catalyst to get out there and start moving people out. The NOAA weather map showed this stuff coming in, I was watching frequently. The local authorities know the terrain, they have the history. I would have been moving mountains to make sure people were informed and safe. But their response came way too late.
I am keeping it real. Allowing dislikes and loathing to walk all over the details is not doing us any favors. Then we start to believe what we wish to believe with predictable results.
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) announced that it was activating state emergency response resources because of the threat of flooding.
That would snap my head around considering the environment going into the holiday.
At some point in the morning, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick later said at a press conference, the TDEM Region 6 Assistance Chief had “personally contacted the judges and mayors in that area and notified them all of potential flooding.” He said it was unclear exactly where in the region the storm would hit.
Another heads up to pay attention.
Around 3:30 a.m. the Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said he was out for an early morning jog along the Guadalupe River and saw “not a drop of rain,” according to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who recounted his conversation with the city manager. Rice added that he left around 4 a.m. when “there was very light rain…We did not see any signs of the river rising at that time.”
He should know better. I can’t get into the mindset on this one.
After the 1987 flood, alarms were installed along the river. However, Rice said that he believes those are south of Kerrville. “There [are] not alarms everywhere on the river,” he said.
That is exactly what transgender athletes and their families and supporters also want. Allow the schools and the organizations who know the athletes best to decide when a transgender athlete can compete.
That’s also the way it was before Trump federally banned transgender athletes from completing at all (though technically, I think he only banned trans female athletes). The NCAA made the rules that allowed Lia Thomas to compete. She had to be on hormone therapy for one year before competing on the women’s team. Due to covid, she was actually on hormone therapy for two years before competing on the women’s team.
See? You and those who support (the miniscule number of) transgender athletes agree on this!
Just unmitigated bull shit. The NWS blasted out two alerts. Flash floods were in the forecast from the day before. He will try to memory hole this.It happened on his watch and he enjoyed himself on the golf course while children’s dead bodies were being recovered.
I don’t know the numbers, but I’m willing to bet that she also swam a lot slower after going through two years of hormone therapy.
Bottom line, she and her coaches were strictly following the NCAA’s rules on transgender athletes.
This whole thing ended up being about her having to hold the 6th place trophy on the podium (I updated my post with the info). Not that anyone could tell what place it was and for goodness sake, letting all the way to 6th place on the podium is also awfully close to the “participation trophies” we give our kids.
As if the wingnuts could give a flying fig about women’s sports.
Those bitches should be in the kitchen birthing babies between meals.
Theatric BS to rile up the rubes.
So it goes.
Here’s a really good podcast that my daughter turned me onto. It’s a little over an hour long, but when and if you (or anyone!) has time, it’s really good.
I guess Riley Gaines got into it with Simone Biles, when Simone basically told her to quit picking on trans kids.
Poo-tee-weet
Great song. Great artist.
I don’t think anyone is saying that we won’t eventually hang this around Chump’s neck. Just that there is no need to rush at him with no real proof. Almost frantic to make accusations. Not helpful, especially when you can roast all the real responsible Rs and R system as you work your way up the food chain and use the facts.
This is a tragedy in a red area of a red state and nobody red is going to come out of it looking good - with no plausible way to blame Dems. We should allow them a little extra time so they can look bad and fugg up some more - and so we know the facts a bit better - before we start swinging.
As soon as we barge in blaming Chump, then anybody else with real culpability is off the hook. We should be learning how to handle these things better.
This is the warning I’ve seen floating around, do you know if this is verified as legit? Because if it is, it’s like 1/3-1/2 of what actually came down.
Order of magnitudes in the eventual effects. Storm plays out as in the warning, nothing like this is happening.
Also smacks a lot of the sort of thing experience and expertise and monitoring, all of which have been slashed, could’ve caught as a storm system behaved outside of the computer modeling.
And the accuracy of the models themselves have been degraded as even far-flung locations like Alaska have had gaps in weather balloons and other data to feed into the models.
As the son of a retired firefighter, I’m also keeping it real.
99% of the time they’re not actively fighting a fire, or something’s a false alarm.
But all that “non-value-add” time not fighting fires, they’re training, they’re inspecting buildings, smoke detectors and alarm systems, familiarization with the buildings and people on “their” turf, when a call comes in they know much of what they’re responding to, what type of structures, age, risks, hazmat materials present, and so on.
Slash your fire department because there aren’t lots of deadly fires, the results are more deadly fires.
Oh, but there is. Because this ain’t even the first of the major weather disasters which has happened. Just like a month ago all those tornado systems had failed early warnings. In conditions where even a handful of minutes can save lives, degrading the operations is costing lives.
Horsepuckey that we’re supposed to wait for a 3-year-trendline to see if he’s doing demonstrably worse. It’s already evident. And waiting is only going to make for even worse disasters and fails in the future.
Heading into the high season for fires and hurricanes, DoD’s cutting off access to their classified satellites to NOAA.
Wait all you like to start pointing fingers, I can tell you right now where they need to be pointed, and preferably before we’re seeing thousands of casualties in single mass events.
Because a few numbskulls are convinced that all they really need to know about the weather is whether it’s gonna rain on the golf course this afternoon.
If only she were Scottish.
Then you could give her a bonny rating!
Tell me how this is different from him destroying a coherent COVID response? Jan 6? Or the many gun massacres? Or the violence in his name, the two dead MN legislators?
He just does his matador trick and OLE!
It’s been 30 years of ‘Thoughts And Prayers’ and ‘Now Is Not The Time’ from well before the Chump Era…and we still don’t have a decent way to hang these things on the responsible parties.
Not saying we wait around or DON’T make attacks. But letting every other R off the hook for 10 years ain’t working. Rope them all in and let them point fingers at each other for a while.
Timmy Burchett couldn’t find his own ass with both hands, a roadmap, a search warrant, GPS, a flashlight, and three people to help him.
