The U.S. Marshals Service on Friday abruptly cancelled an auction of 12 items seized during the corruption case against former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL). The move was made two days after TPM first sent specific questions to a Marshals Service spokesperson asking what steps the agency took to verify the authenticity of several of the items. In a press release, the Marshals Service cited “legitimate concerns about the authenticity of the guitar purportedly signed by Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen and out of an abundance of caution” as the reasons for the cancellation.
