I believe it’s called the Johnson Amendment. Churches that endorse political candidates lose tax exempt status.
It’s the f’ing law.
501 (a) Exemption from taxation
An organization described in subsection (c) or (d) or section 401(a) shall be exempt from taxation under this subtitle unless such exemption is denied under section 502 or 503.
(c) Corporations, and any community chest, fund, or foundation, organized and operated exclusively for religious, . . . purposes, no substantial part of the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting, to influence legislation . . . , and which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.
ETA: The Court isn’t interpreting the law, it’s making it up.
Yup, every democratic candidate needs to have a handy list of the shit that will happen with dates, and they need to make it clear that the only way those can be changed is with a veto proof supermajority. That’s obviously unlikely no matter what, but it’s a solid message to campaign on AND it makes it easier for dems to deflect blame when those things happen.*
*To the extent they aren’t sandbagged by the media, which are our 2nd biggest opponent.
It’s not the courts, it’s the IRS. They’ve decided which parts of the tax code they will enforce.
With this action big money can dump multi$$$$ into a church or some other “charity” followed by that organization dumping that money into a party or candidate. Big money gets a tax write-off. Politics get $$$$.
ETA. Forgot to include the 10% finders fee skim that goes to the pastor.
The decision to hide the Medicaid cuts until after the midterms shows that the magats don’t have confidence that they can simply cancel the elections.
Most of whom voted for the orange POS. Stupid hurts.
Exactly right. No one is waiting for the last Medicaid payment to drop before they close shop. Administrators and healthcare workers will be leaving rural hospitals the moment the writing is on the wall. Specialists will be the first to go. Pregnant and about to give birth? Start driving. Closest maternity ward is about two hours away. Cross your legs so the water don’t break! Good luck! Oncologist? Sorry, only available in the capitol city. Might want to get a hotel for those chemo visits! Well dang, our pulmonologist just got a job in a blue state. Sorry you’re having trouble breathing, but our on-call nurse can take a look. Probably just allergies anyways.
