Many Atlanta Cops Call Out After Prosecutor Brings Charges In Brooks Killing | Talking Points Memo

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta’s police department reassured residents Thursday that it can still protect the city even though officers are calling out in larger numbers than normal, a day after prosecutors charged a member of the force with murder for shooting a man in the back.

Atlanta should thank these men … for supplying their names.

Time to fire them all and start over if killing black people with no penalties is their goal

Real heroes, these cops: ‘protect’ their power ‘and serve’ their masters, leaving regular citizens screwed no matter what the cops decide.

…as happened recently in NYC.

I think there’s a disconnect here. For the first time ever, you have majorities of Americans telling pollsters that yes, cops are brutal and corrupt and racist AF and it’s a real problem, and you have taxpayers in many cities looking at these grotesquely bloated law enforcement budgets and thinking about what reallocating that money toward social services and education could do. And the police unions and their members, who should be sweating all of this, are going “Hurr durr fuck you, civilian sheeple cucks, we’ll do what we want and you will respect our authoritah.”

And now, the Atlanta mayor can fire everyone who called sick and does not credibly demonstrate that they were ill. And decertify the union, since I’m sure that job actions by public safety unions are illegal in Georgia.

And yet another data point revealing the police have less interest in law and justice than in their own ability to remain above law and justice. Seems like whatever money we spent on improving police departments went towards creating the equivalent of the malignant sheriff in an old west 2-pony town.

Hiring practices and training practices must be fixed. If they hire the right people and train them properly, these problems ought not occur.

“The Atlanta Police Department is able to respond effectively to 911 calls. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have an emergency,” the department tweeted Thursday.

Please don’t hesitate to call – if you are a complete fuckin’ idiot, or you are a racist who wants to fuck-up some dark-skinned people.

Can we call the National Guard on the popo?

Let them go.
I read this article yesterday and agree with everything Balko wrote:

I actually requested his book this afternoon from another library out of our system.

I want to see Democratic electeds in every city and state crushing these police unions like they’re Bizarro World Scott Walker. And, to paraphrase Grover Norquist, getting these police departments small enough that we can drown them in the bathtub.

Where’s the tweet from Trump about this unAmerican support of police violence?

when the right to shoot an unarmed black guy running away from you is a step too far?

hi. this is Miss Karen. there is this large black male person who is …

be right over maam. does he look like he might have a concealed weapon?

We have bloated police forces with deeply embedded systemic racism that cost taxpayers millions of dollars and make many of our neighborhoods less safe. Any cop willing to walk off the job because they can’t shoot a black man with no cause or consequences is both part of the systemic racism and part of the bloat.

Let them walk. Fire them and don’t replace them. So many birds with one stone that I can’t even count them.
