Manchin Would Back GOP Sen. Murkowski’s Reelection ‘In A Heartbeat’ | Talking Points Memo

“I don’t think we should be campaigning against any colleagues, Democrat or Republican,” he said.

Is he actually as stupid as this makes him sound, or is it just an act for the even dumber inbreds back home? Is he saying Dems shouldn’t challenge any incumbent Repubs running for reelection next year–or ever? Dafuk?

He’s like a textbook example of everything that’s wrong with the clubby version of the senate that McTurdle has destroyed. Undoing that damage does NOT mean going back to the era of Evan Bayh and Mary Landrieux where Dems catered to the center-right wing of the GOP, just as destroying the Trump GOP does NOT mean going back to the Reagan GOP.

And I think there’s a misplaced “the” here:

The support comes after former president recently vowed to solicit a challenger for the Murkowski’s seat after the Alaska Republican voted in February to convict Trump of inciting an insurrection on the US Capitol.

You know why–and he knows why.

And admin is quite proud of that decision.

No, he’s saying that incumbent senators should not campaign against their also-incumbent colleagues.

Why don’t you just become a TPM member? I think it is well worth the price.

Are they white, male, Xtian and “heartland”? Then he’s for them, period. Guy’s not one of us and I honestly don’t know why he didn’t switch parties long ago. It would be a dumbass more for him to do so now, with a Dem house and president and most trendlines moving in Dems’ direction, but he IS a dumbass, so who knows.

I joined last year, less to read Prime content than because it’s a good site worth supporting. But if commenting is now to be subscribers only, then they should open up Prime-only articles to commenting, including Josh’s op-eds. No one will expect their authors to take part of course and I honestly prefer that they didn’t.

I have them an earful, everyone should. It’s going to kill the site for subscribers as well as non-subscribers.

The filibuster is not a part of the original design.

Given that no Democrat stands a snowball’s chance on the floor of the Senate to win anyway, Murkowski is the best option from our standpoint. I’ve wondered why she doesn’t break away from a GQP that is openly hostile to her and become a full independent. The people of Alaska seem to like her well enough.

Seconding that sentiment. Paid memberships keep the site in business. We all have nits to pick about the emphasis given to some subjects over others, but TPM has grown into an actually independent news gathering organization. I am more than willing to pay the price of a good restaurant dinner once a year to keep this project afloat.

I saw that yesterday on twitter.

That dude’s not right.

A) how, exactly?

B) maybe just be thankful they’re not going to charge per comment

Because without him, the GQP would have a majority. Duh. And thus far, Murkowski doesn’t even HAVE a democratic challenger. Plus, I would point out that she’s one of the extremely few republicans who will stand up to T*. And you think it would be better if she were replaces with a death cultist?

It’s always embarrassing to have to explain the simple facts of life to people.

Strategically, I also tacitly support Mukowski’s reelection bid. That said, the comment is tone-deaf and seems kind of dumb. On the other other hand, Joe Manchin is demonstrably an extraordinarily effective politician to get elected as a Democrat in West Virginia in the 2010s and 2020s.

My final answer is that we should get more Democrats elected elsewhere so I can stop reading so much about Joe Manchin.

Yeah, but Joey Coalboy could at least pretend to like his Democratic colleagues slightly more than his Republican colleagues.

What if he got all crazy and said: “As a Democrat, I would of course support someone on the home team, but I recognize the outstanding service the Senator provides to her constituents”.

He’s tasted his power and notoriety and is now drunk.

Keep the drinks coming till the president can persuade a yes vote out of him on the big important stuff. Then kick him to the curb.

Because it’s going to deprive the conversations of the interactions of more people, which, as @discobot likes to remind us, makes the threads richer in content.

And how many people here are folks like me, who started out on the boards before subscribing later as that took off? I’d never have hung around long enough to decide that this was the commenting community of choice if I’d had to pay up front before trying it out.
