Manchin Threatens To Derail Entire Democratic Agenda With Spending Squeamishness

And you know that his votes for Gorsuch and Kavanaugh put him solidly in the DINO mainstream, so that abortion thingy is just another speed bump we don’t need to worry about cuz, y’all know, with Joey and Krstyee we got the Senate!

It’s terribly regrettable that we have to rely on Joe Manchin for literally any legislation or policy at all. The correct response is to get more Democrats elected in places that are more Democrat-friendly than R+1000 West Virginia.

When FDR pushed and got the New Deal, the debt-fearing naysayers tried this same tactic, proclaiming economic catastrophe and collapse. The reality was quite different. The previously impoverished rose up in prosperity, quickly magnifying tax revenues. This led to the creation of the highly vaunted “middle class,” which was allowed to continue until the advent of Saint Ronnie’s trickle-down nonsense. We’ve been on a steep slide downward ever since.

Perhaps if these senators like Manchin and Semina actually knew and understood this economic history, things would be different. I have to believe certain of their colleagues know this history, “leader” Schumer among them; so why don’t they step in and educate these wayward souls? The GOP is taking us backwards into the dark ages on many fronts and it must be stopped.

This would apparently result in Joe Manchin voting for Democratic priorities more consistently before the 2022 elections?

Every day I give thanks that Joe Biden operates in a results-oriented framework rather than what would feel satisfying in the moment.

This better be some short-lived performative bullshit that ends with playing ball. Otherwise, fuck this guy. Looks like he’s got his and doesn’t give a shit about the rest of us.

That would certainly be a rational explanation for this, Agent Scully. It was the only one I could think of myself for a minute or two. And then I thought, in a group of fifty people, if you had two people that were huge obstructive pains in the ass, that would be a pretty good average, compared to the eight or ten you might often have. It’s just that the majority is so thin and the stakes so high. It’s confounding that he doesn’t, simply as a human being, see the latter. Debt, Joe? Are you fucking serious? Shaking my damn head.

“I, for one, won’t support a $3.5 trillion bill, or anywhere near that level of additional spending, without greater clarity about why Congress chooses to ignore the serious effects inflation and debt have on existing government programs,”

The country is on fire and Manchin’s only response is, “look at me!”

Emphasis mine.

He’s not the one I’m worried about. You do you, Joe Manchin, but he’s going to support this bill as soon as it looks to his constituents, and heck, to himself, like he’s bagged a “win”.

It is particularly tone-deaf of Manchin to say this today, when the northeast is under water, when Louisiana is in a state of widespread destruction, when much of the west is in the midst of a conflagration and there is a raging pandemic. Not to mention that women’s rights have just suffered a decades-in-the-making blow at the hands of republicans, who have corrupted the Supreme Court and undermined the rule of law and democracy itself. Maybe Manchin should start drafting editorials about all of THAT and stop worrying about the national debt.

I’m sorry but when I hear statements about what people “should” do or “must” do because that would be the right thing to do, I think good luck with that. Appealing to their enlightened self-interest is the way to go.
