Manchin Threatens To Derail Entire Democratic Agenda With Spending Squeamishness

I sometime wonder if the approximate 90 Spineless Ones in the Senate are able to read anything other than a check or a poll.

You want him to fall on an expanse of short grass?

Do not pass the infrastructure bill without the reconciliation bill. If we don’t deal with Climate Change we will lose everything. Forests, oceans, beaches, birds, fish, animals, the Amazon Rain Forest…droughts, floods, massive hurricanes, rising seas, melting glaciers, pandemics. Time to wake up.

Manchin already voted for exactly the infrastructure projects you are rightly referencing. He is your (and my) ally - uncomfortable as that might be for a lot of TPMers - on all that. He is not the problem. The problem is AOC and her “progressive caucus”. They are the ones who are refusing to vote for the Hard Infrastructure bill that has passed the Senate and is so critically needed. Pelosi has set September 27 as the date for the House to vote on the Hard Infrastructure bill; we should all be urging AOC and her allies to come down from their self-destructive ideological perch and vote for something that will help Americans right now recover from the current disasters, from hurricanes to floods, to devastating fires. How about it?

Provide airfare and hotel accommodations.

Hard disagree. (We’ve been over this already.)

Apple is building a more populous campus in Austin than it has in Cupertino. And every other Tech company has a huge presence there.

Silence from all of them on voting and women’s rights? Afraid of losing unconscionable tax breaks? Probably.

One of my closest friends and his wife are from Clarksburg. Her family was very much wrapped up in the mob - friend used to tell me, while they were dating, he would go over to her place and Dad would ask him to help count the stacks of money sitting on the coffee table - proceeds from the local ‘business’. Friend used to say he and his wife were the white sheep of the family.

Then there’s the joke I heard at an Atlantic City comedy club that has always stuck with me - even my friend enjoyed it:

Why will there never be a CSI: West Virginia?

There are only five strands of DNA in the State.

AOC has no idea what her job is…she goes for the publicity…she needs to go home and learn something about it all works. she is not calledl ‘Always On Camera’ for no reason.

Why is her suggested thirst for publicity any different from any of the other congresscritters? She’s gotten a bunch of her sponsored bills passed, more in a shorter time than others.

Why single her out for what all the rest do on a regular basis?

You have no problem with Lindsey, who does this on the slightest provocation? Tell me what bills he’s sponsored and gotten through Congress to deserve the attention he’s gotten. He’s managed to pass 18 bills into law in his decades in the Senate. She’s gotten 21 passed in just one term.

Try pointing to the real show-boaters in the group. She’s doing a lot more than others are.

Manchin may be the most unreliable and self-dealing D. Senator since LIeberman, but you govern with the elected officials you have, not the ones you wish you had. Right now, every Requblican Senator, and every pro-Requblican lobbyist in Washington and in all the provinces is lined up in front of Manchin, promising to fellate him if he’ll change parties. He’s eventually going to make that jump. It’s therefore crucial to lock down whatever we can lock down now, before he changes parties or one of the octogenarians in the D. Senate caucus croaks and is replaced by a Requblican governor. Tick tock.

Not a fan of either Lyndsey or AOC. But here’s a note on “bill sponsorship”. When a bill is moving through the Congressional process and toward enactment, anyone can sign on as a sponsor. Sometimes there will be fifty or more sponsors by the time a bill passes.

I’m not aware of any bill that has become law that was AOC’s original idea. I confess, however, to not having done any research on this, so if you know of any, I’d love to see them and would happily give her credit… if I was in agreement!

Point well taken. Not certain, however, that Manchin will switch parties unless we pretty much push him out. There’s a reason for this— and it ain’t pretty. There are plenty of W.Va Republicans who want that seat, and it’s not clear that Manchin could prevail over a strong Republican in a primary.

True, but McCarthy’s using that as an example of the law supposedly not being harmful. He knows that the potential is there, but the lie is a lot more attractive.

This seems to be pretty comprehensive.

Just checked from your list. I looked at the first 10 bills listed. She is the sponsor of only one of them. The one bill she sponsored has gone nowhere.

Now, I don’t mean this as a slam at her, but only a caution about taking her self-promotion seriously.
