Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has decided that spending $3.5 trillion on a reconciliation package slated to contain much of President Joe Biden’s agenda is too much, threatening to derail the Democratic agenda possibly for years.
Manchin should sacrifice his Senate seat for the good of the country, and back filibuster abolition and voting rights legislation, abortion protection, and court reform, in addition to supporting a progressive budget. He’s clearly calculated that he will lose if he does that but it really would be in the interest of the country.
“I, for one, won’t support a $3.5 trillion bill, or anywhere near that level of additional spending, without greater clarity about why Congress chooses to ignore the serious effects inflation and debt have on existing government programs,”
Oh, debt: so, Manchin’s picking up the pretext the reactionaries spent us into for blocking Democratic and social issues legislation.
ETA: How long until he says SSI and Mecaid/care are just too expensive?
Joe Manchin gives Dems their 51st vote. He’s a wealthy guy from a wealthy state and from a wealthy family that is intertwined with Shelly Moore Caputo’s and whose daughter got rich from the company that jacked the price in Epi pens, so no surprises here. The people who want the stimulus package have not demonstrated that voters will elect people who want it so there is no pressure on those who are fighting the stimulus and the tax hikes on capital gains, crypto, estates, etc. to change their minds. Pass the infrastructure bill so at least with all the bad news you get something done.
I guess both the House Dems and Manchin/Sinema are looking to give both chambers to the Republicans. Both groups seem hell bent on making sure Biden’s domestic agenda fails. Spoiled entitled brats the lot of them. Manchin is an attention whore and has been ignored during the Afghanistan coverage. House Dems are young and foolish.
