Manchin Shoots Down Filibuster Carveout For Voting Rights After Meeting With Texas Dems | Talking Points Memo

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things.

Coming out of a meeting with the Texas Democrats who fled their state to block the passage of Texas Republicans’ voter suppression bill, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) remained unswayed by their appeals to allow an exemption to the filibuster for the For The People Act.

“Coy” is such a lame look for old senators.

Manchin will never change the filibuster. His billionaire owners won’t let him.

Gee, whatever would make you say that??? [/s]

That “D” next to his name, must be a typo.

No doubt Manchin has other priorities far more important than protecting the right of American citizens to vote. Oh well, we’ll deal with him later. Manchin knows his actions will have a political price, right?

OK…can we say it now? Manchin is opposed to Voting Rights. He can project his objection on the filibuster or bipartisanship but that’s all bullshit. He doesn’t want people to vote.

B-b-but Manchin supports Biden’s agenda and without him we wouldn’t have the Senate and…!!!

How many times have I heard this bullshit? Can we put it to rest now? Joe “Crow” Manchin is a disgrace and he will single-handedly lose the House, the Senate, and the White House. I sure hope that money he’s being paid is worth it because he’s going to spend his golden years watching the Republic die.

Which is interesting, since most, not all, suppression of the vote will be for people that would actually vote for him - Democrats.

Is he planning to switch parties? Not so sure he’s thought this through, if he plans on remaining a D.

Maybe that’s ok with him. That’s the one thing I don’t understand about all this Manchin drama and I don’t think anyone else knows either - what’s his game? What is truly his end-game and what is the motivation behind it? Is it altogether possible he doesn’t give a rat’s patootie about the Republic dying? Does he really, deeply believe in the nonsense he’s spouting?

Today’s lexical paradox:

Man-chin == Dick-head

If we knew that, we’d know what to do about him. I cannot believe this man is being so obstructionist. It’s vile.

But Manchin is on tape saying he was open to reforming the filibuster–why does no reporter ever directly ask him about his own words spoken just weeks ago?

Actually, I think it should be reframed as “restoring” the filibuster( to its original function as a tool for extending debate on an issue.) There are so many good ideas out there Clyburn has one, Ornstein and Franken also.

Right now, it is true that without him the Democratic Party would not have the Senate. That fact won’t change until the next round of senate elections or some other reason for the make-up of the senate to change. C’est la guerre, but GOTV.

So, let me understand this: The preservation of the filibuster is more important than the preservation of democracy??

Can’t they just say that as soon as they are able to kill the filibuster they will, so unless Joe plans on never having Dems have more than 50 seats in the senate his grand standing is all moot.

Yup. You should just surrender.

Seems to comport with manchins stated intent and deeds.

Carve out WV from all funding unless voting rights gets a carve out.

Near as I can tell, he’s putting his self-image as someone who cares about bipartisanship above any other consideration, even if it means Republicans take control of Congress and the Presidency. He’s not up for reelection until 2024, so there is no immediate threat of being primaried from the left as punishment for intransigence. He may not even run again, since he’d be 76 at the start of a next term. He’s at a point where politicians are polishing their supposed “legacy” and he wants to go out as someone who stood on principle, regardless of the results.

Another analysis would be that he’s just enjoying being in the spotlight, effectively in control of the Senate agenda. He loses that if he just goes along with Dems on everything the party wants. That may be part of it, but I think it’s mainly just a focus on his self-image as a principled politician. Trump isn’t the only narcissist in politics.
