I’m suprised to discover that it’s legal to own more than one passport.

I have had biometric scan checking rather than showing my passport at border control (arrival) in the UK. Have also had passport scan rather than talking to a border agent in a couple of places too.

Biometric is the future. Which is why TSA are taking pics of you returning (and also why your passport photo has to be biometric).

Yes, if you have a demonstrable reason for it. Sometimes it has to do with the countries you travel to. For example, if you have a visa or arrival stamp from Israel you may have issues getting into some of the neighboring countries or vice versa…. If you have to go to multiple locations for business, you may get a second passport.

Speaking from my own experience, international travel from the U.S. requires you to present your passport to the ticket agent or scan it if you’re doing self-check in. If Manafort’s passport was expired, you would expect him to have been bounced at that point. The TSA check is separate, and you can just use your DL or other acceptable photo ID for it.

My tentative guess is that the State Department had his passport flagged in some manner due to an ongoing criminal investigation, and they didn’t want to tip him off to it by revoking the passport right away. So they waited until he attempted to use it, revoked it on the fly, and called CBP to take Manafort off the plane.

Thanks. Just seemed crazy to me.

Yep. My guess is also that they waited for him to get on the plane.

wonder if Manafort inadvertently swung his leg through a ā€œtrip wireā€
& has now brought the world down upon himself?

… or is this just going to be a sort of ā€œinternational travel - traffic ticketā€ - passport expired inspection sticker

Frankly - what is it that Manafort can do that would pay so highly … and be so unique … and that is so rare that … even though he is in many ways radioactive & a freaking walking toxic bomb … there are major players who will go to great lengths to secure his ā€œservicesā€

If Manafort dropped dead - what incredible talent / capability would vanish with him?

He knows where bodies (and money) are buried.

If the FBI didn’t seize them as evidence, they would have been turned over to the court when he was granted pretrial release after his initial arrest. If the court had them, he could ask for their return. If the FBI had them, I wouldn’t bother to ask for it back because the case ended with a conviction.

Most likely, he just got a new one.

I think in the eyes of the law as well. Though without doing the research, I’m not 100% sure that’s correct.

Maybe, but I think it is more likely that it just took some time to get whichever deputy is responsible to cancel the passport, dial up CBP, and get them to the right place. And hey, first class always boards first.

Manafort had to surrender his three passports in November 2017, after his first indictment. Prosecutors said at the time that each passport had a different identification number, and that Manafort had submitted 10 passport applications in as many years.

Um, this is seems odd, no? Three different passports and ten different applications? WTF?

That this guy isn’t rotting away in a Federal Jail for the rest of his days is a scathing indictment of our unaccountable, corrupt system for white collar criminals.

I don’t think it would be all that unusual for a heavy international traveler like Manafort to need new passports as the current ones get filled up with entry stamps and visas. You used to be able to get extra pages to extend the life of a passport, but these days it seems you have to get a whole new book instead.

According to the state department website, passports can be revoked for outstanding tax bills. That sounds just like Paulie Walnuts
