Yeah, but you’ll notice they’re not forthcoming with the details. Weather balloons—light balloons used exclusively for meteorological purposes, are perfectly legal under the international conventions that cover civil aviation. They also have to have a payload weight of not more than like 4.5kg.
The Chinese balloon—which their own statements called ‘mostly’ for meteorological purposes, which right there renders it illegal—carried a payload the size of 1-2 school busses. Good luck getting something that size to come in under 10lbs.
So, sure, some self-reflection is always good. But don’t believe a single word coming out of Beijing on this stuff.
