A running joke in our family to this day.
If we want to end Republican hostage taking, perhaps we should follow the Constitution.
Only provisions for the US military will be allowed. (The food & fodder clause)
Shut down all airports and sea ports, all import/export trade halts, all Border Patrol & INS agents stay home. No Social Security or Medicare. Federal computers supporting the internet get taken off-line. All use of federal lands including grazing, lumber, oil & mining will be halted. Food inspections stop. Agricultural & other big business subsidies halt. etc, etc. etc.
[Sorry. As a retired federal employee, I despise politicians willing to declare federal employees & the rest of this country expendable for the sake of their self-centered insane performance art. The whole “essential employees” bit forces people to work for IOUs in order to minimize the pain in these politicians’ districts.]
I understand the sentiment, but don’t think it would be effective. The politicians pushing for the shutdown (MAGA Republicans) don’t really care about the sufferings of their constituents.
My preferred solution?
During a government shutdown, no salary, benefits (including healthcare) for Senators and Representatives. Additionally, any of them with private investments (such as stocks, bonds, etc.) have to start selling those securities on a prescribed schedule with the funds used to help pay the salaries for ‘essential’ government employees.
If you want change, you need to make the pain personal and financial.
So sayeth the Maggots!.
It was allegedly done to prevent all sorts of chicanery back in the day, but of course the Chaos Monkey cult is using it all to their advantage.
We need to get back to an annual budget. There’s nothing but Republicans stopping that, and the Dems need to go on a two-pronged attack- one on the Republican reasons for a shutdown and two how a budget stops this quarterly bullshit hostage-taking.
Ah! An Originalist! And such a modest proposal. I support this flagrant hyperbole for the purpose of illustrating the incompetence and willingness to break things as its own end displayed by the extremists on the right.
The only way Kevin McCardboard is going to rise to the occasion is if you mix him with yeast.
You could extend that list by going back to the Gingrich era.
What needs to be pounded into the thick skulls of duh 'Merricun voter is that the GOP House ALREADY AGREED to the fiscal year’s spending levels the last time they almost drove the economy off the cliff, just a few months ago.
But, obviously, that agreement was done in bad faith, just as the fiscal arguments now are in bad faith. “Bad faith” ifs now the defining term for ANY Republican action, whether Alabama’s refusal to redraw a court-ordered districting plan, or all the bad faith legal arguments made by indicted Republican operatives or their crooked attorneys, or [FILL IN THE BLANK].
Democrats’ strategy is to put the blame solely on far-right Republicans for what they are already describing as a possible “MAGA shutdown,”
Why would the people who elect these destructive assholes care that they are back jousting with windmills and getting nothing done for our collective future? This government is dysfunctional, ineffective… the legislative version of a kangaroo court…there in all of its fraudulent glory.
Hyperbole, definitely.
It did feel good to do some venting.
Thanks
