I am baffled by the right attacking the new Pope because he is pro-open borders. Why would a Pope, who is Pope for all of the world, preach closed borders? Why would he be MAGA? The funny thing is, this Pope is probably a reaction to Trump and his minions. They made it more likely a Pope like this one would be chosen to respond to their injustices.

Good take. I’m not Catholic, I’m not even christian, but I am a frequent reader of the New Testament, and kind of a fan of Jesus. It felt like Francis got Jesus. He was wrong on abortion, and it’s hard for me to accept that because of the outcomes of that opinion, but I understand it. I was opposed to abortion until my wife got pregnant. Until that point my understanding of human reproduction was theoretical. After that point, I had a much much greater appreciation for how things actually work. I’m not proud of my previous position, because it was pretty misogynistic.
We’ll see about this Leo guy. He wore the red, and that makes me suspect. I don’t think Jesus would have worn the red.

Very much ideologically aligned with his predecessor, and the fact that he chose Leo as his papal name is very significant. The last Leo, the 13th, was the author of the encyclical Rerum Novarum (Latin for “so, about this new stuff”), which is still a very influential statement of Catholic social thinking. In favor of stuff like decent working conditions, unions, and a living wage. Equally opposed to secular socialism and laissez-faire capitalism.

Personally, I was surprised by how quickly the decision happened. Only what, three rounds of voting over just about 24 hours, before the white smoke? Clearly, the efforts by Francis to put his mark on the College of Cardinals was effective.

The political portrait that emerges is baffling to the American mind: liberal on immigration and the poor, conservative on abortion.
Some people believe life begins at conception. Some that it begins when there’s a heart, brain activity, or when it’s born. Some people haven’t thought about it all that much.
These are all fine as personal beliefs. Where liberals draw the line is electing a political party to “sanction” one of them. Or worse, anyone who pays enough.
Everyone is free to practice their beliefs, as long as they respect the freedom of others to do what’s best for them too.
Religion should be free of government interference.
